Lesson 1-6 Pages 30-33 Algebra: Properties Lesson Check 1-5
2
What you will learn! How to use addition and multiplication properties to solve problems.
3
Equivalent Expressions Properties
4
Commutative Property The order in which two numbers are added or multiplied does not change the answer!
5
Commutative Property 3 + 7 = 7 + 3 3 x 7 = 7 x 3
6
Associative Property The way in which three numbers are grouped when they are added or multiplied does not change the answer!
7
Associative Property (2 x 5) x 8 = 2 x (5 x 8) (2 + 5) + 8 = 2 + (5 + 8)
8
Identity Property The sum of a addend and zero is the addend. The product of a factor and one is the factor.
9
Identity Property 4 + 0 = 4 9 x 1 = 9
10
Distributive Property To multiply a sum (or difference) by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parentheses.
11
Distributive Property 3(4 + 8) = (3 x 4) + (3 x 8)
12
What you really need to know! The Big Question! Did the numbers move, or did the group change?
13
Commutative Property of Addition 2 + 3 = 3 + 2 Commutative Property of Multiplication 2 x 3 = 3 x 2 Associative Property of Addition (5 + 8) + 2 = 5 + (8 + 2) Associative Property of Multiplication (4 x 6) x 3 = 4 x (6 x 3) Identity Property of Addition 5 + 0 = 5 0 + 9 = 9 Identity Property of Multiplication 7 x 1 = 7 1 x 6 =6 Distributive Property 3(4 + 6) = 34 + 36

Example 1 Name the property shown by each statement. 24 + 5 = 5 + 24 Commutative +
17
Example 2 Name the property shown by each statement. (11 x 4) x 8 = 11 x (4 x 8) Associative x
18
Example 3 Use the distributive property to write each expression as an equivalent expression. Then evaluate the expression. 8(5 + 7) 85 + 87 ; 96
19
Example 4 Use the distributive property to write each expression as an equivalent expression. Then evaluate the expression. (2 + 9)6 26 + 96 ; 66
