What to do before Scholarships O Take the ACT and/or SAT – no later than October of your senior year O Apply to college – the fall of your senior year O Check college application deadlines – some are as early as October 15 O If you qualify for ACT fee waivers, you qualify for college application fee waivers (up to 4) O Make sure your community service hours are documented

What to do before Scholarships (continued) O Senior essay (personal statement) – instructions are on the school share drive in a “Class of 2014” folder – the instructions are also posted outside Ms. Moss’ office O Resume – any format can be used as long as it is written for scholarships, not a job O Education O Work Experience O Awards or Achievements O School Activities O Community Service

... continued O Three letters of recommendation O English, math, or science teacher: addresses ability in the classroom and the potential for success in college O Specialty area (coach, club sponsor, or elective teacher): addresses contribution to the specific area and about the student’s character O Community member: addresses mainly the student’s character and also contributions made to the community O A fourth letter is good to have in case you need it and it needs to be from a second teacher

Finally ready for Scholarships O Do the Research – District Website is the best source O Click “students” O Below the bulletin board, click “scholarships” O Click on the “money” O There are other national scholarship websites but you are competing against the best nationally

Other Scholarships O School share drive O “Class of 2014” folder O Most scholarships must be done online O Others can be mailed on your own O Some must go through Ms. Moss because they go to the Scholarship Committee here are IHS

Final Scholarship Thoughts: O Do the research O Check the criteria O 3.0 GPA is the magic number for many scholarships but there are some for everyone O Make sure to meet the deadlines O Do not wait until the last minute to research or to apply
