2 USM Overview 11 Degree-granting Institutions –Serving over 130,000 students –Graduated 20,000 students last month 2 world-class pure-research institutions 2 statewide education centers –Universities at Shady Grove –USM Hagerstown System-wide commitment to workforce development needs: –USM Strategic Plan: “USM will work to address the state’s requirements for graduates to fuel a knowledge-based economy”

3 What USM Means to Maryland Lead by the USM, Maryland is well-positioned in the knowledge economy: –Exceptionally well-educated workforce: First in percentage of adults with Bachelor’s degrees or higher First in percentage of professional and technical workers Near the top in PhDs in biological, health sciences, engineers, etc. –R&D powerhouse: First in total R&D dollars per capita First in university-based R & D dollars per capita University-based R & D supports more than 50,000 jobs state-wide –FOUR Northrop Grummans.

4 Focus on Workforce Development Regional Education Centers Universities at Shady Grove –Eight USM institutions at a single location Partnering with Montgomery College, Local Government, Businesses Meeting pressing workforce needs –“new economy” workforce: Life Sciences, Information Technology, etc. –“traditional” workforce: Nursing, Education USM at Hagerstown –Modeled after Shady Grove, serving Western Maryland Policy under consideration by USM Board of Regents –If a USM institutions cannot offer a necessary program at a regional education center, USM will issue an RFP to get program up and running

5 Focus on Workforce Development Community College Partnerships Community College graduates guaranteed admission to USM institutions –Tend to do just as well as “native” students USM Institutions, Education Centers & Community Colleges working in tandem –AAT degree Seamless Path for Teacher Education –Developing an similar path to AAE degree (Engineering) –New Bio-Science program Four-year bachelor of science degree in biological sciences –First two years at Montgomery College –final two years at USG –Degree issued by University of Maryland, College Park
