2 The Cell Membrane is Semi-Permeable or Selectively Permeable. This means it only allows certain substances to enter/exit the cell. It is also called the “Phospholipid Bilayer” SEMI-PERMEABLE

3 Phospho= Phosphate Lipid= Fat The cell membrane is made of phosphate and fats. Bilayer = two layers. So, two layers of phosphate and fat WHAT “PHOSPHOLIPID” MEANS

4 The Cell (Plasma) Membrane is made of many phospholipids joined in a chain. A single phospholipid looks a sperm with two heads. The phosphate head attracts water The fatty (lipid) tail repels water MANY PHOSPHOLIPIDS The water-loving head is HydroPHILIC “PHILOS” is Latin for Love The Fatty Acid tail is HydroPHOBIC It’s afraid of water
