Cell Structure and Function
Lesson 12 – Cell Transport Introduction Cell Structure and Function Essential Question - How do materials move in and out of cells? How are living things alike?
2
How are living things alike?
Objectives Students will be able to: Observe and describe diffusion occurring Compare and contrast active and passive transport List examples of passive transport in their daily lives How are living things alike?
3
How are living things alike?
Warm Up: How are living things alike?

How are living things alike?
Vocabulary Terms Diffusion – The process by which molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. Osmosis – The diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane. Active Transport – The movement of materials across a cell membrane using cellular energy. Passive Transport – The movement of dissolved materials across a cell membrane without using cellular energy. How are living things alike?

Conclusion Questions:
OBSERVE How long did it take for the food coloring to spread through the water? Write an explanation for the changes you observed. How would the results be different if you used a larger amount of water What do you think would happen if you used hot water? CALCULATE Assume that there is one cup of water in this experiment. How long would it take one drop of food coloring to spread throughout in four cups of water?

The Cell in Its Environment
Crossing the Cell Membrane Molecules move into and out of a cell by means of passive or active transport. Complete the boxes, and describe where the concentration of each substance is high or low.

The Cell in Its Environment
Water Molecule Imagine that the yellow line is the cell membrane. What is the overall direction in which water will travel as a result of osmosis?

The Cell in Its Environment Chapter 1 Section 4
Cells and Heredity - Read Chapter 1 Section 4 in your Cells and Heredity text. Answer questions 1-8 on the back of your lab worksheet. We will discuss your reading when we are done.
