3. What is BESTF?(1) A trans-national programme to support Bioenergy demonstrator projects that are close to commercialisation Denmark Navarra Germany Portugal UKSweden Finland Switzerland

4. What is BESTF? (2) SET Plan European Industry Bioenergy Initiative Plan to accelerate the development and deployment of cost-effective low carbon technologies Industrial initiative launched under the SET Plan which aims to: enable commercial availability of advanced bioenergy at large scale by 2020 strengthen EU technology leadership ERA-NET Plus - Bioenergy Demonstrations of the EIBI Output from EIBI implementation plan addressing: joint strategic planning and programming for Bioenergy projects accelerated development / deployment of innovative Bioenergy technologies

5. Why BESTF?(1) 20% of energy needs from renewable sources by 2020 EU targets Achieving GHG emission savings of 60 % for bio-fuels and bio-liquids 20% GHG reduction 1990/2020 Low carbon energy that is sustainable, secure and competitive 10% of energy for transport from renewable sources by 2020

(2) Bioenergy Can contribute towards greenhouse gas savings Non- intermittent energy supply Used for heating & cooling, electricity production or transport Diverse sources contribute to a diversified energy mix that improves energy security Boost to various economic sectors eg agriculture, forestry, waste management, transportation and storage

7. Mechanism for BESTF Enable the EC to support the organisation of joint calls between national research programmes by topping-up joint trans-national funding with Community funding Aid the creation and establishment of technologies to adapt the current energy system into a more sustainable one, less dependent on imported fuel. FP7 ERA-NET Plus scheme

8. BESTF Objectives Launch a transnational call for bioenergy demonstrator proposals Provide finance and managerial support to collaborative bioenergy demonstrator projects

10. BESTF – Call Scope (2) Projects funded by BESTF initiative will: Align with one or more of the EIBI 7 value chains Be at an appropriate stage of development, enabling commercial deployment after 3-4 years Be industry-led and involve partners from at least 2 participating member states

13. 11 Proposals received covering various technologies: Gasification, pyrolysis, fermentation, anaerobic digestion, torrefaction, continuous fractionation All value chains represented Countries represented: UK, Finland, Germany, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland Total grant applied for: 59,296,533 Call Status(2)

14. What next? Proposals will be assessed for national eligibility Eligible proposals will be invited to Stage 2 Proposals will be updated according to Stage 1 feedback International expert panel assessment Proposals ranked in order of technical excellence Proposals will be funded based on: Technical ranking National budget (including EU top-up)

Evaluation Criteria Stage 1 eligibility is assessed in accordance with national procedures 2 stage evaluation criteria include: o Fit to call o EU dimension and industrial leadership o Project set up o Innovation o Quality of technological concept o Risk analysis (economical and technical) o Implementation potential o Sustainability o Future market deployment of concept o Strong business case o Impact, dissemination, exploitation plan and knowledge sharing o Societal issues

16. The total public funding (EU and national/regional) available for this action is up to 49M Euro National funding conditions apply Public funding is only available for proposers from the BESTF partner countries/regions It is advisable to contact the national (regional) funding agency at an early stage of the proposal.
