HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008 – 2009 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Technology at my fingertips! Interactive opportunities between schools. Ability to have courses that couldn't run otherwise. We’re able to communicate with students with backgrounds other than our local rural community. The main strength is being able to provide a course to students at schools with small student population. We are able to interact with students that we don’t normally have and Distance Learning is an excellent way to tie technology to the classroom. It is a great forum for public speaking. Better course offerings for higher-level students. 1. What are the strengths of distance Learning? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008 – 2009 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Missed classes due to different schedules. – My ability to interact with students is limited. Group or team work is difficult. For AP calculus I wasn't able to use the Smartboard in my classroom. Also, I was not able to take students to our math computer lab because the students at remote sites would miss a class. Limited materials before and after class. We did not have reliable laptops and could not depend on them to run a smooth lesson. Had to be prepared with a backup in case the technology did not work. We need a better pick-up and delivery service. The students at the remote sites need to be more proactive if they don’t understand something. It requires exterior lines of communication for teachers to use. Outside of class communication is not easy. 2. What are the weaknesses of Distance Learning? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008 – 2009 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Software, web pages, black board, closed circuit email, extra help time in DL room, Blackboard incorporated. Larger TV screens. – A computer at my home site would be nice. It is very important I have consistent matching schedules, reliable up to date equipment. Yearly training on equipment-sharing tricks. Careful matching of teacher and aide prior to school year. Find some way for the classes or at least the aides to meet each other in person before the school year to build rapport. Incorporate a Smartboard into the system. A document scanner at each site for homework collection/submission. Move monitors for teacher closer. Incorporate an internet connection into the system. Our school’s technical people were not cooperative on this last item. Make discipline and attendance procedures more clear and enforce them. 3. What changes would you suggest for distance learning classes? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008 – 2009 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Several students in one of the receiving schools seemed to be placed in the class as a “filler” resulting in poor grades. I always learn from a new teaching setting. Nothing was unexpected, but I change my approach with some of the material. The overall size of my writing class was too large to easily have discussions. I established friendships. 4. Are there any outcomes from teaching this course that you had not expected? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008 – 2009 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I prefer to print out my power point presentation and preview them over the Elmo it is more visible and I can write on it to highlight important things. I tried more inter-grouping between schools so the interaction would be better. There was a fabulous aide that I worked with this year. I was able to rely on her to share responsibilities with her such as attendance, make-up assignments and quizzes. I also stayed connected to her via e-mail constantly. I used Youtube, PowerPoint, Elmo and different forms of practice excercises for different students. Comments 5. Did you use any new instructional methods to effectively teach in the DL classroom?

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008 – 2009 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I have emailed students assignments and they have emailed me questions. I used, e-mail and a web-based grading system with messaging capabilities. I also used Google docs as a wiki and collaboration tool. Yes, journals. These were written in periodically and handed in from time to time for me to read and supply comments. Telephone and email to guidance counselor and teacher, students are not allowed email. Comments 6. Did you use any other forms of communication with the students in addition to daily …... distance learning classroom instruction (such as e-mail or telephone)?

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008 – 2009 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 7. Did you visit your remote sites? No Yes No response

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008 – 2009 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I visited 2 of the 4 connecting schools, It was good interacting with the students and good to see their home environment. No- I regret not doing so but it would have been really tough on my schedule- the girls did come visit us for field trips and special days. Excellent way to develop rapport with students and for the two groups to meet face to face. Highly recommended! Yes, I only visited the remote site once, they also visited here a we met at FMCC for a class. I would recommend doing this sooner and more often. Frequently once a month to do hands on labs and dissections. I visit once a year. The advantages are the personal connection with the students. The disadvantages, too many schools to visit and a lot of time out of my home site. Comments 7B. What were the advantages / disadvantages to visiting your remote school(s)?
