1 Hazards in the Home poisonous flammable corrosive explosive HHPS Symbol Safety Precaution

2 2 NH 3 (aq) + 2 NaClO (aq)  2 NaONH 3 (aq) + Cl 2 (g) ammoniableach Mixing equal amounts of bleach & ammonia will result in the formation of chlorine gas: Do NOT, under ANY circumstances, try this at home!! The Importance of Reading Labels

3 When a greater amount of bleach is added than ammonia the reaction is: NH 3 + 3 NaOCl  3 NaOH + NCl 3 nitrogen trichloride Nitrogen trichloride is a very toxic chemical & a volatile explosive! When a greater amount of ammonia is added than bleach the the reaction occurs in three steps: NH 3 + NaOCl  NaOH + NH 2 Cl NH 3 + NH 2 Cl + NaOH  N 2 H 4 + NaCl + H 2 O 2 NH 2 Cl + N 2 H 4  NH 4 Cl + N 2 hydrazine (a component of rocket fuel) The heat from the last reaction is so great that it usually leads to an explosion!
