Hazard Communication HAZCOM STANDARD OPERATIONS with HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS CHEMICAL HAZARDS HOW to DETECT HOW to PROTECT WRITTEN PROGRAM MSDS's LABELS

Written Program How This Employer will inform you about chemical hazards In the Yellow and Black MSDS binders Hazard Determination All manufacturers and importers must determine the hazards of their chemicals

MSDS’s Must be immediately available for all chemicals Labels All containers (with few exceptions) must be labeled Training Formal training (like now) Informal training (every day)

BeralcastBeryllium Shell ConstructionCrystalline Silica DegreasingSolvents Battery ChargingSulfuric Acid Hydrogen Gas Disinfection, LaundryClorox Bleach List all operations that use chemicals List All Chemicals Used Discuss with Supervisor and Co-Workers

CHEMICAL HAZARDS ALL CHEMICALS ARE HAZARDOUS BerylliumSensitizer - Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD) - A Fibrosis SilicaSilicosis - A Fibrosis Clorox BleachCaustic - Strong Base, Dermatitis Sulfuric AcidIrritant - eye, nose, throat, skin Cumulative Lung Damage Hydrophilic - Heats with water added You can find many more hazards in the MSDS's

HOW to DETECT Detector tubes Direct Reading Instruments Personal and Area Air Sampling Sulfuric AcidColorless to Brown Oily Liquid Burning in Nose and Eyes Clorox BleachSmells Like a Swimming Pool Again - Refer to the MSDS's for more information

HOW to PROTECT Respirators -Protect only against rated chemicals Concentration you breath = Concentration in air Protection Factor Protective Clothing - Gloves, Aprons, Boots, etc. No material protects against all chemicals Chemicals eventually break through any protective material

HOW to PROTECT AlcoholNatural Rubber or Neoprene GasolinePolyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Sulfuric AcidPolyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Other Personal Protective Equipment Splash Goggles, Face Shields Safety Glasses not for chemical splashes Bonding and Grounding protects against sparks Some chemicals require ventilated areas

WRITTEN PROGRAM Describes how This Employer gets information to YOU In the Yellow and Black MSDS Binders The plan includes Training before assignment near chemicals Training whenever new hazards are introduced Annual refresher training Continual, daily informal training

WRITTEN PROGRAM Annual review to insure all chemicals are on list Annual review to insure all chemicals have MSDS's Monthly inspections to insure all containers are labeled Available to you or your representatives for copying

MSDS's Material Safety Data Sheets are in yellow and black binders Also available on-line at SIRI Vermont MSDS's contain: emergency information - first aid directions health, fire, reactivity hazards protective measures – ventilation, gloves, splash goggles Much, Much More

LABELS Do not deface or remove manufacturer's labels All other containers must have: 1. Name of the product (as on the source container) 2. Health and safety hazards (may use HMIS) Names on labels same as on MSDS’s Names on the chemical list same as labels

LABELS NFPA 704 - Hazard Diamond Red - Fire, Flammability Blue - Health Hazard Yellow - Reactivity White area shows fire fighting information Higher the Number, GREATER the Hazard

LABELS HMIS Hazardous Materials Information System Red - Fire, Flammability Blue - Health Hazard Yellow - Reactivity White - PPE Pictogram represents required PPE Higher the Number, GREATER the Hazard

Thank You
