3. Learning Goals Define a watershed Describe the physical characteristics of a watershed Differentiate between the non-living and living components of an environment Identify plants and animals that live in lakes, ponds, streams and wetlands. Identify organisms that are dependent on one another in an ecosystem. Identify different types of pollution and their sources. Write multi-paragraph informational pieces (e.g., descriptions, letters, reports, instructions) Use relevant graphics (maps, charts, graphs, tables, illustrations, photographs).

4. Understandings Students will understand the important role watersheds play in supporting people, animal and plants Students will understand how they can have an influence over the pollution of our watersheds. Students will understand that Technology helps us monitor our impact on the environment. As students they have a voice and can help make a difference in the future of our environment.

5. Student Centered Learning Targets I can identify characteristics of a watershed. I can identify the watershed in which they live. I can determine the effects of pollution on a watershed. I can create a model / map of a watershed. I can analyze the negative effects of people on their own local watershed and identify solutions to the problem. I can produce a project that can provide insight to my local watershed and put their solutions into the public eye.

6. Essential Questions What is a watershed? What makes up a watershed? What factors influence the quality of life and water in a watershed? What watershed do I reside in? What about my community has a positive or negative effect on the local watershed? What body of water does my local watershed feed into and what is the health of that body of water?

7. Family Survey/ Pre-Assessment Purpose To get you to begin thinking about watersheds. To give you an opportunity to have conversations about watersheds outside of the classroom with your family. To help me figure out what you already know (and what you don't know)!
