Reflecting on the Past Building the Future Taking Care of our Brains so We can Take Care of our Earth Photo from inhabitat.com HISD Briargrove ES 9/11/13 U-Roc Lesson 3
2
So how are you going to Save the earth? The future depends on clean water, and clean water depends on YOU! 1/2 The future depends on YOU!
3
What is WATER? Why do we need water? What part of the earth is water? What part is available for drinking? What is a WATERSHED? Are we all connected by watersheds? What is in a watershed?
7
Watershed Design Step 1 1.Crumple up white sheet of paper 2.Trace ridges with blue marker These represent streams and rivers 3.Fill flat surfaces with blue marker These represent the lakes
8
Watershed Design Step 2 Be careful these markers are permanent. 1.Observe the blue lines and pick sides One side of paper will represent civilization Other side will represent forests with rivers 2.Draw houses, cars, buildings and roads one side Use Permanent black marker These represent civilization items 3.Draw plants and trees Use Permanent green marker Draw most trees on the forest side Draw plants. 4.Tape the four corners of the watershed to blue construction paper This represents a large body of water
9
Watershed Step 3 What pollutes water? – Use just the side with civilization, house, cars, roads. – Color in types of pollution that can occur. – Ideas: Brown – pet waste Orange – gas, grease or oil waste green – fertilizer. – Add M&M to represent trash
10
Watershed Step 4 What happens when it rains? Clear desks 1.Using spray bottle simulate a rain storm 2.Stop spraying when the water is running down the paper 3.Observe what happens – What is happening in the watershed? – Does that mean you could be drinking dirty water? – Why is the water cleaner on one side, but not the other side of the watershed?
11
Pollution Solutions What can be done to keep pollutants from rivers, streams, and lakes? What filters water naturally? – Plants and trees – Wetlands – Sand – Oysters – Coconuts
12
Why care about Watersheds? – What is the watershed closed to Briargrove ES? – How many watersheds do you think are in the Houston area? – What makes them different watersheds? – What body of water you do think the watersheds in Harris County flow towards? A watershed is the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place.
