Evolution Relationships: Competition

Maryland Content Standard Give reasons supporting the fact that the number of organisms an environment can support depends on the physical conditions and resources available.

The students will be able to explain that within any environment organisms with similar needs may compete with one another for resources. This competition is reduced when organisms use different sets of resources, such as birds in a forest eat different kinds and sizes of seeds. Objective

Essential Question What are the benefits and downfalls of competition?

Warm-Up Observe Figure 13: Niche and Competition page 26 –Explain how the niches of the warblers differ. –Explain how their body shape and beak allow them to stay in the niche they survive in. –Are their any other competitions in the figure? –Relate the figure to the school’s outdoor ecosystem.

Activities Guided Reading Activity (continued from yesterday) Complete Graphic Organizer “What You Know” about how animals survive in an ecosystem together Read pages 26 through 29 (only) in Environmental Science With a partner, discuss “What You Know” and how it differs with the text. Continue Graphic Organizer “What You Learned”

Explanation Address misconceptions that were found in the “What You Know” section of the graphic organizer. Address that adaptations allow a reduction of competition for food, water, and shelter. Predation is when one of the resources needed for survival (food) is another living thing. Tie in adaptations found in predations relationships. Teachers: Change this slide as you see fit to discuss the above information.

Vocabulary New vocabulary Vocabulary Chart

Extension Internet Activity: –www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/survival/coral/www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/survival/coral/ Complete the graphic organizer about adaptations that are found on the coral reef.Complete the graphic organizer –Fill in the fourth column only –Check through the first three columns from last class. –Symbiotic relationships will be address in the next lesson –This is a three day activity, please keep the organizer safe!

Evaluation Answer number 18, page 38 (Review and Assessment) Use evidence from reading to support your answer.
