You can lose more than your patience by: J Godman
3
What It is This is an image made by the website goodparent.pl for their “you can lose more than your patience.” campaign against child abuse.
4
View This indicates that child abuse can be seen by anyone (the front door) but can easily be over looked (the door to the left of the baby). Take for instance a child having a broken arm; the parents can claim that the child fell down a flight of stairs, but in reality was broken by the parents. The focal point of this piece is the child who is sitting in a room, in the foreground. The remainder of the house can be found in the background; note the front door to the far left and the door just to the left of the baby.
5
AUDIENCE This image is targeted toward parents of young children who may lose their temper easily.
6
Appeal: Ethos The appeal to Ethos here is to assist the seemingly helpless child, As any caring human being would.
7
Appeal: Pathos The appeal to Pathos is the sympathy felt by the viewer upon looking at the picture.
8
Exaggeration Clearly children are not nearly as fragile as porcelain dolls also your child will not break into millions of tiny little pieces if it falls.
9
Omission Upon omitting the text, what was lost? Through removal of the logo, message, and website the original intent of the piece was lost.
10
Compare the Two Does changing the gender of the baby have an impact on the message? What about how the baby is broken?
11
Message This is a strong message about the devastation experienced by abused children. The visual of broken porcelain children says it all: children are as fragile as porcelain, and if they ‘break’ under the cruelty of child abuse, their childhood and even their whole life are lost – more than their abusive parents’ temper.
