This is a review of the slides we used while discussing... The Spirit D&C 5-6, 8-9

Key Doctrines 1) Spirit can guide in all things.

“The grand privilege of every Latter-day Saint... to have the manifestations of the spirit every day of our lives” (President Lorenzo Snow, CR, April 1899, p. 52).

“Every man has the privilege to exercise these gifts and these privileges in the conduct of his own affairs; in bringing up his children in the way they should go; in the management of his business, or whatever he does. It is his right to enjoy the spirit of revelation and of inspiration to do the right thing, to be wise and prudent, just and good, in everything that he does.” (President Harold B. Lee, Stand Ye in Holy Places [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1974], pp. 141-42).

“I will, in the commencement of my remarks, take up a subject... It is regarding the Spirit of the Lord manifesting his will to his children. There is no doubt, if a person lives according to the revelations given to God's people, he may have the Spirit of the Lord to signify to him his will, and to guide and to direct him in the discharge of his duties, in his temporal as well as his spiritual exercises. I am satisfied, however, that in this respect, we live far beneath our privileges.” (Discourses of Brigham Young, p.32 - p.33)

Key Doctrines 1) Spirit can guide in all things. 2) Revelation to beat the Adversary.

“A man is saved no faster than he gets knowledge, for if he does not get knowledge, he will brought into captivity by some evil power in the other world, as evil spirits will have more knowledge, and consequently more power than many men who are on the earth. Hence it needs revelation to assist us, and give us knowledge of the things of God.” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 217) “A man is saved no faster than he gets knowledge, for if he does not get knowledge, he will brought into captivity by some evil power in the other world, as evil spirits will have more knowledge, and consequently more power than many men who are on the earth. Hence it needs revelation to assist us, and give us knowledge of the things of God.” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 217)

Key Doctrines 1) Revelation to beat the Adversary. 2) Spirit can guide in all things. 3) Perfect in Christ.

“A person may profit by noticing the first intimation of the spirit of revelation; for instance, when you feel pure intelligence flowing into you, it may give you sudden strokes of ideas...thus by learning the Spirit of God and understanding it, you may grow into the principle of revelation, until you become perfect in Christ Jesus.” (Teaching of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 151)

“Now the Lord has placed in His Church certain gifts, and these gifts are intended to help bear us up in such times as I speak of; to strengthen us in our weak places, in our defects of character, to help us to conquer our imperfections. If a man has a bad temper, he should pray to God to give him power to subdue that temper, and fill him with the spirit of charity; for charity suffereth long, is kind, and not easily provoked... This comes from God and He gives it to His servants and people when they ask in the proper way for it. We can conquer our tempers in this way, by seeking to the Lord for this gift... These gifts are placed in the Church for the perfecting of the Saints. There is no one that has a defect in his or her character but what there is a gift in the Church, promised by the Lord to correct that defect... There are no gifts in the Church which God has promised us but what He will give if we live for them.” (Collected Discourses, Vol.2, George Q. Cannon, July 5th, 1891) “Now the Lord has placed in His Church certain gifts, and these gifts are intended to help bear us up in such times as I speak of; to strengthen us in our weak places, in our defects of character, to help us to conquer our imperfections. 11 “No man ought to say, ‘Oh, I cannot help this; it is my nature.’ He is not justified in it, for the reason that God has promised to give strength to correct these things, and to give gifts the will eradicate them.” (George Q. Cannon, Millennial Star, 23 April 1894, p. 260- 61) “No man ought to say, ‘Oh, I cannot help this; it is my nature.’ He is not justified in it, for the reason that God has promised to give strength to correct these things, and to give gifts the will eradicate them.” (George Q. 12 Key Doctrines 1) Revelation to beat the Adversary. 2) Spirit can guide in all things. 3) Perfect in Christ. 4) Lead by same Spirit.

“As an Apostle I listen now to the same inspiration, coming from the same source, in the same way, that I listened to as a boy. The signal is much clearer now.” (Boyd K. Packer, in Conference Report, Oct. 1979, 30; or Ensign, Nov. 1979, 21)

Ways to Invite D&C 5-6, 8-9

“It is not wise to wrestle with the revelations with such insistence as to demand immediate answers or blessings to your liking. You cannot force spiritual things. Such words as compel, coerce, constrain, pressure, demand, do not describe our privileges with the Spirit. You can no more force the Spirit to respond than you can force a bean to sprout, or an egg to hatch before it's time. You can create a climate to foster growth, nourish, and protect, but you cannot force or compel: you must await the growth. Do not be impatient to gain great spiritual knowledge. Let it grow, help it grow, but do not force it or you will open the way to be misled.” (Boyd K. Packer, The Candle of the Lord, Ensign, Jan. 1983, 51-56). “It is not wise to wrestle with the revelations with such insistence as to demand immediate answers or blessings to your liking. 19 Against Such There Is No Law Galatians 5:16-26; Alma 7:23; Moroni 10:4-5; Mosiah 3:19

Now, young people, pay attention! Before I say another word about personal revelation, I must tell you so that you cannot possibly misunderstand: “There are many spirits which are false spirits.” There can be counterfeit revelations, promptings from the devil, temptations! As long as you live, in one way or another the adversary will try to lead you astray... The Prophet Joseph Smith said that “nothing is a greater injury to the children of men than to be under the influence of a false spirit when they think they have the Spirit of God.”... By trial, and some error, you will learn to heed these promptings. (Boyd K. Packer, Personal Revelation: The Gift, The Test, and The Promise, Ensign, Nov. ‘94,p. 59

“A man must have the discerning of spirits before he can drag into daylight this hellish influence and unfold it unto the world in all its soul-destroying, diabolical, and horrid colors; for nothing is a greater injury to the children of men than to be under the influence of a false spirit when they think they have the Spirit of God... As we have noticed before, the great difficulty lies in the ignorance of the nature of spirits, of the laws by which they are governed, and the signs by which they may be known...” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Section Four 1839–42, p.205- 206)

Ways the Spirit May Come D&C 5-9 ‘manifestation’ (D&C 5:16)‘manifestation’ (D&C 5:16) ‘instruction’ (D&C 6:14)‘instruction’ (D&C 6:14) ‘enlighten thy mind’... ‘speak peace to your mind’ (D&C 6:15, 23; 11:13)‘enlighten thy mind’... ‘speak peace to your mind’ (D&C 6:15, 23; 11:13) ‘good desires’ (D&C 6:27)‘good desires’ (D&C 6:27) ‘Fear not to do good’ (D&C 6:33)‘Fear not to do good’ (D&C 6:33) ‘Look unto me in every thought’ (D&C 6:36)‘Look unto me in every thought’ (D&C 6:36) ‘feel that it is right’ (D&C 9:8)‘feel that it is right’ (D&C 9:8) ‘fill your soul with joy’ (D&C 11:13)‘fill your soul with joy’ (D&C 11:13)
