Air Quality in Hong Kong By Julia Lam 8N
2
Why is the Air Quality in HK so bad? The air quality is so bad in Hong Kong because of the dense population, people smoking, the power factories burning fossil fuels for electricity in Lamma Island, and the air pollutants from vehicles. People in Hong Kong use a lot of electricity and cars. Most people would rather drive than take the public transports. People also using the air- conditioners up till Autumn. Electricity is made by burning fossil fuels and the burning of fossil fuels produces a greenhouse gas called CO2.

What is the main “contributors” of HK’s air pollution Hong Kong’s main air pollution is CO2 (Carbon Dioxide). Some of the main “contributors” to the CO2 level in Hong Kong are… -Cars / Vehicles/ Ships using diesel, and diesel is a kind of fossil fuel. -Electricity is generated by the burning of fossil fuels. For the indoor pollution (smoking) the government had… -Banned smoking indoors starting from the first of January 2007.

How can we improve HK’s air quality? What is the HK Government doing to improve HK’s Air quality? A poster showing one of the ways the HK government is trying to improve HK’s air quality. Another poster showing one of the ways on how the government is trying to improve the pollutions. The boy in the poster is saying “I want to keep this beautiful blue sky the same!”
5
How does bad air quality affect us? The bad air pollution is affecting us in many ways. Both mentally and physically. People, from personal experiences, are usually more stressed in polluted areas. They are more easily angered and lose their temper. People are also suffering asthmas, lung damages and cardio-respiratory problems due to breathing in too much pollution and bad air around Hong Kong.
6
Other Sources of air pollution in Hong Kong Another source for Hong Kong’s air pollution is from China. China is a developing country, she is named as the World’s Factory, so there are lots of factories producing air pollutants everyday. The polluted air has been blowing from Northern China to Hong Kong, especially during the winter because of the North wind. The Hong Kong Government and the Guang Dong Province Government have already had an agreement on the improvement of air pollution.
7
Does Hong Kong’s air pollution have anything to do with its dense population? The dense population of Hong Kong is very much related to the air pollution. The more people there are, the more pollution there will be. Some of the reasons are… -More people, more cars, more usage of air conditioner, more CO2 produced -More people, more electricity used, more CO2 produced
