REGULAR VERBS Verbs that follow certain patterns are called REGULAR verbs. -ar endings = o, as, a, amos & an -er endings = o, es, e, emos & en -ir endings = o, es, e, imos & en The endings of these verbs tell us who is doing the action.

IRREGULAR VERBS Verbs that do not follow certain patterns are called IRREGULAR verbs.

IRREGULAR VERBS The verb ir is IRREGULAR. It means “to go” in English.
It is often followed by the word a + a destination: Voy a la piscina.

IRREGULAR VERBS The verb -ir is irregular
because it sort of conjugates like an –ar verb but it is an –ir verb.

You must memorize the forms of “ir” because it is an irregular verb and it follows no pattern.

A Contraction Used with Ir
We use the verb ir + a + definite article + location to talk about a destination. When the a comes before a singular masculine noun and the singular masculine article (el) we must create this contraction – al The a + el ALWAYS becomes the contraction al. It is NEVER a el! Voy al hospital. (ALWAYS!) Voy a el hospital. (NEVER!) X X
