36 COUNTERCULTURE TERMS & LINGO MAN: Basically refers to anybody or anything. Usually unnecessary to completing a sentence or thought in grammatically correct form, BUT IT DEMONSTRATED THAT YOU WERE COOL, HIP, OR NOT A “SQUARE”. THE MAN: Any group, entity, or institution that was viewed by youth as oppressive or potentially oppressive. This categorization could, and often did, encompass anybody over 35-40 yrs. Old. Usual targets in this categorization were: The U.S. Government The U.S. Military Big Businesses Mainstream religious institutions Anybody who was successful, except for rock stars/musicians, actors, artists, poets, novelists, or philosophers, because they weren’t “corrupt”…Man!

39 COUNTERCULTURE TERMS & LINGO PAD: Place of residence, domicile, etc. CRIB: Place or residence, domicile, etc. BREAD: Money DOUGH: Money COOL: Hip, alluring in a confident way RIGHTEOUS: Meaningful, of great importance, and probably cool as well HEAVY: Of deep meaning, requiring great insight and thought (or maybe just a lot of drug use), probably righteous, and probably cool as well DEEP: Heavy
