What is a negative word? The adverb not is a negative word. It expresses the idea of no. It can be part of a contraction.

Be Careful… Be careful to avoid using two negative words in the same sentence. This is called a double negative.

What happens when you have two negatives in a sentence? They cancel each other out! Multiply two negatives and you get a positive. The same can be said in English… I couldn’t hardly wait. Wait! Does that mean you could wait or you couldn’t wait? I am confused…

I am not going to pay no bills. Actually means: If you don’t have any bills, how can you pay them! She can’t make friends with nobody. Actually means: How can you make friends with a nobody. They don’t exist!

Correct Way I am not going to pay any bills. She can’t make friends with anybody. Can only have one negative in the sentence.

Affirmative (Positive) Words Affirmative words are the opposite of negative words like no and not. Think of them as “positive” words! They show the idea of “yes.” Ever, always Anybody, somebody One, all, some, any Everyone, someone, anyone Something, anything Somewhere, anywhere

negative negative I don’t need no education. negative positive I don’t need any education. Keep the first negative. Change the second to a positive. Hint: Anytime you see no second, change to any!!
