Voting

Why is voting important It is our right Your vote is your voice! When we vote, we are choosing the people who will be in charge of making laws for us When we vote, we are choosing the people who will get to decide how Alberta's money is spent Voting is a good way to send a message to elected people in government Compared to other ways you could get involved in politics, voting takes very little time

Who can vote You can vote in this election if:  you are at least 18 years old  you have lived in Alberta at least 6 months on election day  you are a Canadian Citizen

How to get added to the voters list Come into or call the SAIPA office with your drivers licence or ID card and we can help you get registered online. Call 1-780-427-7191 and they can register you over the phone.

What do you need to vote  If your name is not on the voting list, you can still vote but you must bring ID and complete a form called a declaration. The ID must be a driver’s license or an Alberta issued ID card. If you do not have a driver’s license or Alberta issued ID card you must provide two approved pieces of ID:  AISH card  Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan Card  Birth Certificate  Canadian Blood Services Card  Canadian Passport  Library card  Social Insurance Card

When is the election May 5, 2015 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Where can you go to vote You can go online to find out where you vote Come into or call the SAIPA office with your postal code and we can help you find out Usually something will come in your mailbox that tells you where you can vote too!

Voting Tips Make sure you understand what each candidate believes and what they are going to do for you and Alberta. You can have a support person gather and read information to you. Their role is to help you understand what is being said. A staff or any other person should not influence or push you to vote one way or the other. Remember, this is your vote – not anybody else’s. If you don’t understand who or what you are voting for you can leave your ballot blank. It is your right to ask questions or ask for help if you are unsure. Make sure you find out what each candidate stands for.

Voting Tips Questions to ask the people who want your vote (candidates):  Do they have the commitment to do the job?  Are they responsible?  How will they help you?  Why are they running?  What do they want to achieve? Make sure you also tell the candidates what is important to you!

What are some ideas for messages What is something you NEED the government to know about you, people with disabilities, the services you get, the community, the struggles you have, or the things you are happy with

STICKY NOTES!!!!

Voting Now we would like you to sticker vote on some of the concerns we have talked a lot about over the last couple of years!

How it works Everyone gets one sticker. You have to put it on the idea that is the most important to you. This means you are picking the ONE thing you want the government to know about THE MOST! There are four choices Accessibility Safety Standards Budget – Money Being Listened to

What’s Next… Put SRSAN’s key message into a package for everyone SRSAN go to forums to make sure people hear their message SRSAN go to candidates offices to share their messages
