Character Studio: Biped

Character Studio is a very powerful Plug-in for 3D Studio Max. aids in the creation of animation of two-legged and four-legged characters characters can interact with their 3D environment. The following is a quick overview of the Biped portion of the plug-in. Character Studio is a very powerful Plug-in for 3D Studio Max. aids in the creation of animation of two-legged and four-legged characters characters can interact with their 3D environment. The following is a quick overview of the Biped portion of the plug-in. What is Character Studio:

Character Studio combines two plug-in components, the Biped system & Physique modifier. Biped is the skeletal system for your characters skin to be supported and animated by Physique is a deformation modifier that skins or attaches your characters mesh to the links in the Biped skeleton. 4 The Biped System is located under the right command panel under: Object Create>Systems>Biped To create a Biped system click Biped under the right command panel >Create>Systems> Click & drag in the top Viewport to define the Biped systems height. Avoid clicking without dragging or you will create unwanted tiny Bipeds Bipeds are usually created with the destination mesh in the scene for fitting The Biped System is located under the right command panel under: Object Create>Systems>Biped To create a Biped system click Biped under the right command panel >Create>Systems> Click & drag in the top Viewport to define the Biped systems height. 5 Manipulating a Bipeds parameters is carried out under the Motion Tab of the Right Command Panel. A Biped body part has to be selected for its parameters to appear under the Motion Tab. The Bipeds motion can be Footstep driven or free-form Biped body parts can be rotated, scaled and moved using transform tools Manipulating a Bipeds parameters is carried out under the Motion Tab of the Right Command Panel. 6 Foot-step driven animation is created by: Footstep driven animation is performed by creating footsteps and arranging a footstep pattern Rotate and move tools are used to arrange footsteps The plug-in generates keyframes for the Bipeds parts, creating the motion The generated motion is a basic motion sketch that you alter to give it personality The keyframes of the biped parts can used as placeholders in time for customizing a motion Foot-step driven animation is created by: Footstep driven animation is performed by creating footsteps and arranging a footstep pattern Rotate and move tools are used to arrange footsteps The plug-in generates keyframes for the Bipeds parts, creating the motion The generated motion is a basic motion sketch that you alter to give it personality The keyframes of the biped parts can used as placeholders in time for customizing a motion Footstep Driven Animation:

Exercise - Create footsteps to make a Biped walk: 1.Click and drag in the top view to create a Biped. 2.In the motion panel click the Footstep sub-object editing button 3.Click the Create Footsteps button 4.Input the number footsteps required (12?) 5.Click the Create Keys for Inactive Footsteps button to create the keys for the Biped body parts 6.Exit Footstep editing mode 7.Scrub thru the timeline to see the Biped in Motion Exercise - Create footsteps to make a Biped walk: 1.Click and drag in the top view to create a Biped. 2.In the motion panel click the Footstep sub-object editing button 3.Click the Create Footsteps button 4.Input the number footsteps required (12?) 5.Click the Create Keys for Inactive Footsteps button to create the keys for the Biped body parts 6.Exit Footstep editing mode 7.Scrub thru the timeline to see the Biped in Motion Footstep Driven Animation:

Free-form animation is created by animating bipedal body parts. By using the transform tools (move & rotate), with animate turned on, motion is achieved. Use the free-form animation method when the use of footsteps is not required (Biped diving a car, Biped flying thru air, Biped standing waving, etc) Free-form animation is created by animating bipedal body parts. 9 Exercise – Biped Free-form animation. 1.In a new scene create a Biped 2.Turn on animation mode 3.Using the rotate tool, select the Biped’s head. 4.Go to frame 30 & rotate the bipeds head so its looking at the camera 5.Right-click on the Biped head & select the move transform tool from the menu 6.Select the left or right Biped hand 7.Go to frame 60 & in the perspective view move the hand to a different position 8.Go to frame 70 & Select the other hand and move it to strike a pose 9.Turn off animation mode and scrub/play the animated body motion Exercise – Biped Free-form animation. 1.In a new scene create a Biped 2.Turn on animation mode 3.Using the rotate tool, select the Biped’s head. 4.Go to frame 30 & rotate the bipeds head so its looking at the camera 5.Right-click on the Biped head & select the move transform tool from the menu 6.Select the left or right Biped hand 7.Go to frame 60 & in the perspective view move the hand to a different position 8.Go to frame 70 & Select the other hand and move it to strike a pose 9.Turn off animation mode and scrub/play the animated body motion Free-form Animation:
