FRANKINCENSE Support Body Systems
Top oil being researched in US & Europe for anti-cancer properties Skin repair for dry, sensitive & mature skin acne, wrinkles, cuts, scarring (1-2% dilution with carrier oil) Stimulating and elevating to the mind Calming to overcome stress and depression Relaxes muscles Stimulates respiratory system to slow & deepen breathing analgesic, antidepressant, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, diuretic and sedative In 3000 BC, Frankincense had more value than gold and was sometimes referred to as “liquid gold.” Gum resin harvested from Frankincense trees located in Oman, India, Somalia and Yemen is distilled into Frankincense oil. One of the oldest medical documents known to man dating back to 1500 BC recorded the use of Frankincense oil by physicians and priests alike for the treatment of disease and illness. Today modern science is giving validity to these early ancient practices and, once again, the essential oil of Frankincense is bringing new hope for improving and maintain optimal health. Like all essential oils, Frankincense brings complexity and synergy through its many beneficial compounds and structures. Researchers have discovered that compounds identified as sesquiterpenes stimulate the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain, as well as key glands. No wonder the rich aromatic scent of this unique essential oil is calming to the senses, emotional state, and overall sense of well-being. It is nearly impossible to list all of the benefits linked to this potent essential oil, and science is just beginning to understand some of its more prominent benefits. Researchers from Japan and the University of Maryland both determined that Frankincense oil has anti-inflammatory properties. This is critical when you realize that inflammation is widely believed to be the root cause of illness and disease. Modern uses include muscle relaxation, immune stimulation, uplifting to mood and heightens awareness, antidepressant and is generally supportive of body systems. Frankincense oil can be used topically, internally, and diffused into the environment.

Collagen / Elastin Fibers
Keratinocyte SC Epidermis Fibroblast Collagen / Elastin Fibers Dermis Capillaries To understand how the technologies work we must first understand some skin anatomy and physiology. The skin has three primary layers, the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous fat layer. Their functional roles are as follows: Epidermis: The epidermis is the top layer and is comprised of rapidly dividing cells Keratinocytes, that are “born” at the base and mature while being pushed upward, eventually reaching the surface of the skin and then slough off. As we age the time at which it takes a cell to be born, mature and slough off increases up to 40%. This means that the rate at which cells turnover slows down and this causes a major visible sign of aged skin; the epidermis is thinner with less volume and is more transparent. It also does not adhere as well to the second major layer of the skin, the dermis. Dermis: The dermis is composed mainly of collagen and elastin fibers which provide the structural scaffolding of the skin. The Fibroblast is the functional cell which produces collagen and elastin. They are sparsely distributed throughout the dermis and do not divide. The collagen and elastin component is constantly being remodeled, meaning that the components are constantly being produced and torn apart so that a new undamaged compliment to support the epidermis is present. Collagen and elastin are destroyed by Collagenase and elastase, the respective matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) enzymes designed to remodel and remove damage. Subcutaneous Fat Layer. The subcutaneous fat layer is just below the dermis and is mainly composed of fat cells and blood vessels. Adipocytes – fat cells. Provide cushion, support, and volume. This layer is responsible for skin radiance and also helps fill in skin volume affecting the appearance of wrinkles. Good circulation along with an even skin surface gives the skin good light reflectance and an increased “rosy glow”, radiance, or skin color which gives the impression of youth. Adipocyte Subcutaneous Fat
43
Old Skin vs. Young Skin As we age:
Cell turnover in the epidermis slows down causing the epidermis to thin. In the dermis fibroblasts produce less collagen and elastin than when younger. Creates less net collagen and collagen is more damaged, less flexible and more prone to wrinkle. Enzymes designed to help remodel collagen, collagenase and elastase, speed up collagen degradation processes.
44
Proprietary Rhizobian and Acacia Gum Extracts
Immediate “Lifting” effect These gum extracts are absorbed and spread out on the skin surface to form a network. When the polymer dries, the film retracts and stretches the skin. The effects last until you cleanse your skin again. The left side represent the local area before application and the right side correspond to 5 minutes after application and drying of the product. Immediate and visible lifting effect and smoothes the skin relief ESSENTIAL SKIN CARE © 2009 dōTERRA International, LLC, Unauthorized duplication or presentation prohibited.
45
Anti-Aging Moisturizer
Matrikine Messaging: Reducing the appearance of wrinkle depth, surface, and volume! When collagen is broken down (as the result of an injury, or AGING), small protein fragments get left behind. These protein fragments, called polypeptides, act as cell messengers to “turn on” healing activities. They stimulate Keratinocytes to increase cell turnover and also Stimulate Fibroblasts to increase collagen and elastin production, which is the result we are looking for. Questions? 61
62
7- Step Home Facial
63
Step 1 - Cleanse Remove dirt, makeup and impurities from the skin’s surface with essential oil. To 1 oz Fractionated Coconut Oil add 6 – 10 drops of one or a combination of these oils: Clary Sage, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Rosemary, or Thyme. Blend oils in an amber bottle for easier use and apply to the face. Gently wipe off with a warm, wet cloth.
64
Step 2 - Scrub Scrubs help to gently exfoliate (slough off) dead skin cells that can contribute to acne, dryness and wrinkles. Apply a scrub after cleansing face, to remove impurities, 2 – 3 times a week. Only use warm water. If your skin is sensitive, avoid using abrasive scrubs. Scrubs help to stimulate circulation to the face.
65
Step 2 - Scrub Extra Gentle Scrub
Pour 2 teaspoons baking soda into hand. Add essential oils and a little water to make a paste. Apply scrub, massaging in a circular motion, leave on minutes . Rinse well with warm water, pat face dry. Other Scrubs Use ½ teaspoon cornmeal (blue is finest), flaxseed meal or oatmeal, and 1-2 drops of Clary Sage, Geranium, Lavender or Ylang Ylang oil, add water to make a paste. Apply scrub, massaging in a circular motion, leave on 3 -5 minutes. Rinse well with warm water, pat face dry. For Dry Skin: add egg yolk to 1 teaspoon chickpea flour, 1 teaspoon honey, 1 drop Lavender oil. Apply over face and neck for 20 minutes then wash well and pat dry.

Add 6 – 10 drops essential oil to 1 oz Fractionated Coconut Oil. Choose oil appropriate to skin type. Apply appropriate oil over face and neck following the massage guideline. Repeat steps 4 times.
67
Step 4 - Steam A steam will aromatically help to cleanse pores, moisturize skin and improve facial circulation. Inhaling essential oils may be beneficial in alleviating: anxiety, colds, flu, respiratory ailments, stress and sinusitis. Steaming the face once a week and following with a mask will increase the effectiveness of the mask to rid impurities. Use oils for your skin type.
68

Special Tips for Acne To Help End or Avoid Acne:
Cleanse the colon, the kidneys and the liver. Avoid fried foods, sugar, dairy, alcohol, coffee, tea, chocolate and high sugar fruit. Use Mineral Makeup to avoid cosmetics containing colors, dyes, fragrances and preservatives. Eat wholesome nutritious foods – lots of vegetables. Cleanse face 2 times daily. Spot treat blemishes with essential oils throughout the day. Follow a weekly regime of cleaning, scrubbing, massaging, steaming, masking, toning, and moisturizing.
74
Step 3 – Massage Guideline
Begin at base of neck under chin and stroke up to top of ear. Start at jaw and move our hands to corner of the mouth; to the corner of the nose; cheekbone; then up to the temple and middle of forehead. Make a circle from inner corners of the eyes and under your eyes. Massage above upper lip to outside of the mouth. Stroke forehead upward to hairline. Massage head by gently tapping the head all over, stimulating circulation. Rub along the scalp and gently move scalp over the head. Gently tug on hair from the roots to relieve muscle tension.
75
Step 4 – Steam Guidelines
Steam after cleanse, scrub and face massage. Steam face by draping a towel over head and a large bowl to catch the steam or use a store bought steamer. Hold face over steam about 12 inches away from water – warning hot – relax for 10 minutes with eyes closed. Rinse with cool water or massage with ice cold cloth. For very dry or sensitive skin use a hot compress as an alternative to steam. Immerse washcloth in hot water with essential oil, wring out, apply to face and repeat as cloth cools.
