The Gift of the Goose Cheering Others On Management giving compliments and encouragement to the work of their team Not just managers - everyone encouraging everyone else – but management must lead Having a worthwhile task and the freedom to do it is a Mission – underlying need is for fulfillment

No Score - No Game In sports performance is measured and cheered constantly at each increment – Cheer on and congratulate your workforce – Involve your organization in supporting each others performance – Open information and incremental recognition keep score

E=MC 2 Enthusiasm = Mission times cash and congratulations Congratulations is the Missing Link in many incentive programs – Many organizations save congratulations for a ceremonial function just before Christmas bonus checks Have you ever watched a Football game where people sat in stone cold silence until someone made a touch down?

True Congratulations True Congratulations are – Timely (get there quickly after people do things right) – Responsive (linked to specific definable achievements and actions) – Unconditional (don’t link it to - do better or do more - the condition is already met) – Enthusiastic (the manager is on stage - believe it - be positive - put the energy into the congratulations that you want them to put in the job)

Cheering the Right Thing Cheer Progress - Not Just the Result – Make the work place its own little sports arena – Results are made of progress and opportunities capitalized upon What if there is nothing to Cheer a person for? – There is always something – We live in a society that tries to find whats wrong in order to fix it - need a change of mindset – If people know what they’re doing right and have power to do it - maybe you won’t have to fix what is wrong
