2 Kentucky BRFSS BRFSS is an adult (age 18+) telephone survey Co-sponsored by CDC and KDPH Surveys households not businesses or group homes Types of Questions Core: Asked to all states Modules: Questions developed by CDC, states have option to use them State Added Questions: Developed by the states or health programs

10 Mental Illness and Stigma About how often during the past 30 days did you feel nervous? During the past 30 days, about how often did you feel hopeless? During the past 30 days, about how often do you feel restless or fidgety? During the past 30 days, about how often did you feel so depressed that nothing could cheer you up? During the past 30 days, about how often did you feel that everything was an effort? During the past 30 days, about how often did you feel worthless?

11 Mental Illness and Stigma During the past 30 days, for about how many days did a mental health condition or emotional problem keep you from doing your work or other usual activities? Are you now taking medicine or receiving treatment from a doctor or other health professional or any type of mental health condition or emotional problem? Treatment can help people with mental illness and lead normal lives. Do you agree slightly or strongly, or disagree slightly or strongly? People are generally caring and sympathetic to people with mental illness. Do you agree slightly or strongly, or disagree slightly or strongly?

12 DMH Planned Uses of the New 2007 Module Mental Illness & Stigma Better describe the extent (prevalence) of depression & mental illness stigma among the general population, including elders. Improve targeting of resources for anti-stigma efforts as well as for special mental health projects. Improve targeting of interventions within KDMHMRS' Suicide Task Force Project.

19 Health Status: Frequent Mental Distress From 1996 to present the health status questions were asked on the survey as a core questions. The frequent mental distress question is part of a compounded health status question that asks:

20 Frequent Mental Distress Questions: Individuals age 18 and older who stated that they had 14 or more days of poor mental health when responding to the question, “Now thinking about your mental health, which includes stress, depression and problems with emotions, for how many days during the past 30 days was mental health not good?”
