The Scientific Method What is it? Who uses it?
3
Steps to the Scientific Method Queen Harriet Eats Dead Cats YUCK! Question/Problem Hypothesis Experiment Data Conclusion
4
Step #1 Question or Problem The 1st step is to identify what problem or question you want to answer. For example: –What type of laundry soap gets my clothes the cleanest?
5
Step #2 Hypothesis Create an “educated guess” to answer your question. If I use Tide laundry soap, then it will get my clothes the cleanest.
6
Step #3 Experiment During this step the scientists will need to actually test out their hypothesis Put stain on t-shirt Use 5 types of laundry soap (Tide, Cheer, Era, Arm & Hammer, Chlorox)
7
Step #4 Data Scientists collect information from their experiment For example: –Tide- totally removed stain –Era - stain is still visible –Cheer- stain is gone –A & H - stain is still visible –Chlorox- shirt disappeared
8
Step #5 Conclusion Based on the data, the scientist decides whether or not his/her hypothesis was correct If the hypothesis is incorrect, go back to Step # 2 and make a new hypothesis
9
Who Uses the Scientific Method? Scientists Doctors (my ear hurts) Inventors Bakers/Cooks Basically Everyone –You use it without even knowing
