Task(s) addressed MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014 Deliverables Calibration functions for geophysical methods Samples will be retrieved from the field site that will be permanently instrumented by MAGIC. Intact samples will be subjected to cycles and drying and wetting and bulk dielectric permittivity and electrical conductivity will be measured simultaneously by TDR technique together with volumetric water content to derive suitable calibration functions Scale effects on calibration functions Samples will be reconstituted in the laboratory from the same site material with different levels of aggregation to investigate scale effects on electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity functions. 6 Task(s) addressed MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014 Work /activites undertaken Testing of intact samples Calibration of TDR probe Work /activites undertaken Testing of intact samples Calibration of TDR probe

Method MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014 Testing of intact samples measurement in field by CMD (Electromagnetic Conductivity Meters) laboratory measurement by TDR and ERT Testing of intact samples measurement in field by CMD (Electromagnetic Conductivity Meters) laboratory measurement by TDR and ERT

Method MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014 Calibration of TDR probe to establish the relationship between conductivity and the reflections Calibration of TDR probe to establish the relationship between conductivity and the reflections - known concentrations of salt solutions, sodium chloride, were set with the known conductivity of the solution -the known concentrations were set according to CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (Weast, Astle and Beyer, 1985) in a table which lists the conductivity of the solution and moles of salt required for the solution

Results (1) MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014 Electrical resistivity measurements on intact sample

Results (2) MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014 NaCl Calibration for probe used on intact sample to determine Probe Constant K p NaCl Calibration for probe used on intact sample to determine Probe Constant K p

Difficulties encountered in the research undertaken MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014 different samples of soils for measurement in laboratory drying or wetting process of sample is time consuming different samples of soils for measurement in laboratory drying or wetting process of sample is time consuming

Actions taken MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014 the samples were taken from embankment near Galston finally only one type of sample was measured = Intact Galston clay the samples were taken from embankment near Galston finally only one type of sample was measured = Intact Galston clay

General difficulties MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014 maybe problem with some financial deposit on the start of secondment for housing (no problem for private company) maybe problem with some financial deposit on the start of secondment for housing (no problem for private company)

Outlook of future career MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014 A procedure for the measurement of soil electrical conductivity via TDR has been developed, which will be used for testing of intact samples taken from the instrumented ‘benchmark’ sites. A few field combined measurements of water content and electrical resistivity would be sufficient to tune any calibration curve from laboratory experiments on samples of reduced (aggregate) size. General benefit is for good modeling of water content in embankment or dam.
