1 Annotation and PDF formats Several features allow you to make the most of your stylus and the programs on your Klein ISD Tablet PC: Annotating (“Writing”) on PDFs Using Inking Tools in Office programs Exporting Office files in PDF formats to retain your stylus work before submitting assignments Let’s look at annotations using the stylus with PDF documents others have created first. 2 Task 1: Open a PDF and mark it up Access a PDF document like the Copyright and Fair Use for Students handout on StudentNet. You can find that handout here. Save the file, adding your name or initials. Open the file from the location where you have saved it. Click the Comment box in the upper right corner of the window. Open the Drawing Markups section. Click the Pencil icon. Mark on the document using your stylus. Save the document with your notes added. Be sure to rename the file you have marked up. 4 Why annotate on PDF documents? Annotating on PDF documents will make it easy to download homework, use your stylus to complete it, and upload it after saving it renamed as your assignment. In Office programs like Word and PowerPoint, you can annotate using your stylus while continuing to type in a document or slide show. You’ll find Inking tools in the Review tab in each program. 5 Task 2: Annotate in Office programs Open a Word or PowerPoint document. Enter a few lines of text, and save the file. Click the Review tab to access commenting and inking tools. Click the Start Inking button near the right side of the screen. Mark text as you want. Annotation & PDFs Slide 5 of 8

6 Click Stop Inking when you finish annotations. Click the Home tab to close inking tools in the Review tab. Click your cursor to resume typing. Be aware the annotations in Word and PowerPoint can be deleted as individual items. Watch where you click if you use this option so all your work remains intact. Before submitting assignments you annotate in these programs, export them as PDFs. Task 2: Annotate in Office programs Annotation & PDFs Slide 6 of 8

7 Task 3: Export an Office Document to PDF Format Complete all work in the document and save it for possible changes in the future. Click the File tab. Choose Export from the list of options on the left. Click Create PDF/XPS in the center area of the screen. Save the document where you can retrieve it for uploading or submitting.
