11. What is a transitional course? Designed to be taken in the senior year of high school For students who are 1-3 points below benchmark on their ACT Successful completion of the course (including placement test) should allow student to enter college taking credit-bearing courses rather than remedial coursework

14. College Readiness - Draft Definition College readiness is the level of preparation a first-time student needs in order to succeed in a credit-bearing course at a postsecondary institution

15. College Readiness - Draft Definition “Succeed” is defined as completing entry- level courses at a level of understanding and proficiency that prepares the student for subsequent courses

17. Career Readiness – Draft Definition Career readiness is the level of preparation a high school graduate needs in order to proceed to the next step in a chosen career... postsecondary coursework industry certification entry into the workforce

Career Readiness – Draft Definition According to the Association of Career and Technical Education (ACTE), career readiness includes core academic skills and the ability to apply those skills to concrete situations in order to function in the workplace and in routine daily activities employability skills that are essential in any career area such as critical thinking and responsibility technical, job-specific skills related to a specific career pathway.

19. What is Career Ready? Core Academic Skills – Students must be able to apply academics in context. – Students must be equipped academically to analyze and use technical manuals and research articles. – Attention must be given to the areas of data analysis and statistics, reasoning, and solving mathematical problems. Employability Skills – Critical thinking – Problem solving – Professionalism & ethics Technical Skills – Business & industry leaders have identified 16 career clusters and 79 pathways.

20. Meeting Academic Standards All units of study are aligned with the Kentucky Core Content (soon to be the college- and career-ready standards). Students have the opportunity to obtain math credit through the following courses: – Construction Geometry – Financial Literacy – Technical Math Bell ringer activities (Monday & Wednesday = Writing to Learn; Tuesday & Thursday = Math Problems)

21. Providing Employability Skills All students are encouraged to participate in career and technical student organizations. Career units of study are taught in every CTE program. Students with disabilities participate in transition fairs coordinated by the Regional Interagency Transition Teams. Kentucky Occupational Skill Standards Assessments are administered each spring to students completing a CTE program. Teachers make arrangements to provide adaptive services when needed in administering the exams.

22. Obtaining Technical Skills All courses taught at the area technology centers are aligned to the technical competencies of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. Dual credit agreements are in place between Kentucky Tech and KCTCS. Curriculum is reviewed semi-annually by representatives from business and industry. All CTE programs are required to have a business advisory committee with at least seven members. Students are provided opportunities to participate in work-based learning. Many students with disabilities participate in co-op, practicum, and shadowing activities.

23. Access to Curriculum and Programs Individual Education Program (IEP’s) of students with disabilities are reviewed immediately following registration each spring to ensure appropriate placement. (Review team includes: principal, CTE teacher, and representative from special education department) CTE teachers are required to attend ARC meetings. Teachers attend training each year on how to make appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities.

Professional Development for Teachers Annual CTE Summer Program (One program strand always deals with special populations) Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (Teacher Performance Assessment = Collaborative Project) Regional Special Education Cooperatives (Ongoing PD throughout the year) Tech centers are required to provide the following training on opening day: confidentiality, blood-borne pathogens, emergency procedures, bullying, and suicide prevention. Regional Networks are providing training in July 2010 on the new college- and career-ready standards.
