1. Lesson Purpose
Determine the obligations and responsibilities of citizens and evaluate how they impact the common good. Connect how these relate to being an active participant in society, government and the political process.

2. Common Good
Common good - beliefs or actions that are seen as a benefit to the larger community rather than individual interests. Common good can also be called the public good.
Bien común - creencias o acciones que son vistas como un beneficio para la comunidad más grande en lugar de los intereses individuales. Bien común también puede ser llamado el bien público.
On your paper, write a definition of the common good in one complete sentence.

3. RESPONSIBILITY
A responsibility is something you SHOULD do to impact the common good of your community. You are not required or forced to do it, but it is an essential part of becoming a good citizen.
La responsabilidad es algo que deberías hacer para afectar el bien común de su comunidad. No requiere o forzado a hacerlo, pero es una parte esencial de ser un buen ciudadano.

4. OBLIGATION
An obligation is something you are required to do. It is not optional.
La obligación es algo que están obligados a hacer. No es opcional. Es un deber ciudadano.

7. Rotating Stations Activity Instructions:
identify if you are reading an obligation or a responsibility
Column 1
write the title of the placard on either the responsibility or obligation side of the activity sheet
Column 2 & 3
write a summary sentence explaining what it is and list the evidence from the placard that led them to decide if they are reading about an obligation or responsibility.
You’ll have 2 minute at each station

8. Return to your seat
Work with your FACE partner to complete Columns 4 & 5 (5 minutes)
Brainstorm and write about how the obligation or responsibility benefits the common good and what the consequences are if it is not fulfilled.

“Pretend that you are now 18 years old and you have just arrived home from school or work and you receive this in the mail. What is this asking you to do? How do you know? Are you required or obligated to show up?” Is there a consequence if you do not show up? How do you know? If everyone receiving a jury summons decided not to show up for jury duty, what would be the impact on the people who are on trial?”

11. Where did my tax dollars go?
Look at the pie chart and share out some of the programs or departments where tax dollars are spent.
Consider what the consequences are for the programs if they receive less tax dollars.

12. Day 2: Answer me this….
“What does it mean to actively participate in something? Can you be a member or participant of something but not active? Can you think of any examples of this at school? Are there clubs or groups you are a member of but you don’t actively participate?”

Write a well-crafted response using the following

Based on what you have learned about obligations and responsibilities of citizens in this lesson, choose two obligations and two responsibilities and write an informational paragraph to explain what occurs if citizens do not fulfill the obligation or responsibility and the benefit to the common good when they do fulfill the obligation or responsibility.
