2. Week Three September 10 and 12 Goals: to become familiar with the English sound system to become familiar with the TL sound system to compare the two sound systems

3. Objectives Students will be able to show evidence of their understanding of the English sound system by using the terminology for manner and place of articulation for consonants and vowels. SWBT compare English with the TL sound system by using a Venn diagram to show similarities and differences.

4. What is phonetics? Phonetics is the general study of speech sounds. The smallest unit of sound is a phoneme. There are 40 phonemes in English. We use the phonetic alphabet to transcribe the sounds (phonemes) of a word.

5. Types of phonetics Articulatory: how speech sounds are made Acoustic: the physical properties of speech as sound waves Auditory: the perception of speech sounds through the ears
