1 Moneywort (Lysimachia nummularia) Family: Primulaceae (prim-u-la-see-ee) Derived from primula, primrose, from the medieval name primulaveris meaning first of spring used for early flowering herbs. Genus: Lysimachia (ly-si-MAK-ee-uh) From the Greek lýsimacheion which cam from the named for King Lysimachus of Thrace, who used the plant to calm his oxen (which is also where the common name loosestrife comes from). The name loosetrife is applied to all species in the Lysimachia genus which often gets confused with members of the Lythrum genus. Lysimachia are sterile to their own pollen and may produce hybrids further confusing the somewhat similar species in this genus. Species: nummularia (num-ew-LAH-ree-uh) Fron munnus, meaning coin-shaped or resembling a coin and usually applied to plants with small almost circular leaves.
