2 n About 1.8 million species of organisms have been named and described. n Biologists have created a system for categorizing organisms, separating them into groups according to their similarities.

3 Levels of Classification n Species: a group of organisms whose members have the same structural traits and who can interbreed with each other. n Genus (plural genera): a group of related species. n Family: a taxonomic group comprised of members of similar genera. n Order: a group of similar families.

4 n Class: a taxonomic group comprised of members of similar orders. n Phylum (plural phyla): a major taxonomic group, lower than the kingdom, comprising members of similar classes. n Kingdom: a taxonomic group comprised of members of similar phyla.
