Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik Sustainability: Ability to design projects that optimize, conserve, or reuse natural and built resources, provide healthful environments for occupants/users, and reduce the environmental impacts of building construction and operations on future generations through means such as carbon-neutral design, bioclimatic design, and energy efficiency. evolution of a criterion

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik “Sustainability is not a destination, but a journey.” I hope NOT – but without truly understanding the destination the journey may well be interminable An example of knowing the destination follows

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik

Buildings are the major source of global demand for energy and materials that produce by-product greenhouse gases (GHG). Slowing the growth rate of GHG emissions and then reversing it is the key to addressing climate change and keeping global average temperature below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. INTENT

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik The 2030 Challenge … to adopt the following targets: All new buildings, developments and major renovations shall be designed to meet a fossil fuel, GHG-emitting, energy consumption performance standard 60% below the regional average/median for that building type. At a minimum, an equal amount of existing building area shall be renovated annually to meet a fossil fuel, GHG-emitting, energy consumption performance standard of 60% of the regional average for that building type. The fossil fuel reduction standard for all new buildings and major renovations shall be increased to: 70% in 2015 80% in 2020 90% in 2025 Carbon-neutral in 2030 (using no fossil fuel GHG-emitting energy to operate). CRITERIA

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik These targets may be accomplished by implementing innovative sustainable design strategies, generating on-site renewable power and/or purchasing (20% maximum) renewable energy. METHODS

ASHRAE Guideline 32-2012: Sustainable, High Performance Operations & Maintenance 1. PURPOSE: The purpose of this guideline is to provide guidance on optimizing the operation and maintenance of the building to achieve the lowest economic and environmental life cycle cost, without sacrificing safety or functionality.

In My Humble Opinion … DESIGN PROFESSIONALS should NOT use the word “sustainable” as an adjective to describe buildings, systems, features, components UNLESS – “sustainable” has been benchmarked by a clear and verifiable criterion

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik Use “sustainable” in a meaningful way! A suggested starting point …

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik SUGGESTED USAGE Energy efficient: Use this term only to describe a building that exceeds the minimum requirements of the prevailing energy efficiency code

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik Green: Use this term only to describe a building that reduces negative site/global environmental impacts by constraining energy, water, and materials consumption SUGGESTED USAGE

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik Net-zero energy: Use this term only to describe a building that annually produces on site, from renewables, as much energy as it consumes ?? ….. BUT ≠ green SUGGESTED USAGE site | source? boundaries?

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik Carbon neutral: Use this term only to describe a building that produces no net negative carbon dioxide emissions by addressing the use of energy and materials ?? ….. BUT ≠ green SUGGESTED USAGE site | source? boundaries?

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik Sustainable: Use this term ONLY to describe a building that produces no net negative site/global environmental impacts by very seriously addressing energy, water, and materials consumption ?? ….. BUT >> green SUGGESTED USAGE

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik Regenerative: Use this term only to describe a building that produces net positive site/global environmental impacts by very seriously addressing energy, water, and materials consumption ?? …. BUT >> green and also > sustainable SUGGESTED USAGE

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik A PLEA Important words MUST mean something … especially for professionals. Let’s make this happen. Don’t use or allow others to use the term sustainable as an adjective unless such use is documented as valid. “Sustainable features” must go.

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik Use good design moves, green technology, net-zero approaches to achieve sustainable performance … and appreciate that this discussion has addressed only one of three spheres of sustainability

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik OUTCOMES ?

Taller Nacional de Arquitectura | Quito | March 2013 | Walter Grondzik what is the right thing to do?
