Turbochargers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGhlgphrBxA&feat ure=related

Turbocharger Is an engine component that improves engine performance through the introduction of additional air into the intake system Turbochargers utilize volume, intensity, and speed of existing exhaust gases from a running engine to drive a compressor. http://www.thesaabsite.com/About%20Saab %20turbos.htm http://www.thesaabsite.com/About%20Saab %20turbos.htm

Diesel Engine Turbocharging Uses a compressor to raise the pressure and the density of the air entering an engine. An exhaust-driven turbine drives a small compressor on the same shaft to pressurize the intake air. This increases the total mass of air introduced per cycle.

The increased air mass Increases the power output. Improves fuel economy. Can reduce overall emissions.

Turbochargers Must operate at high temperatures and high rotational speeds for maximum benefit. Turbo Lag occurs!! – Period of time between when the operator demands more power and the time when the intake air reaches maximum pressure for the desired power.

Parts of a Turbocharger Turbine Turbine housing Central rotating shaft Turbocharger compressor wheel Turbocharger compressor housing Wastegate

Turbine Provides a turbocharger with the needed rotational force to compress ambient air to a positive pressure.

Turbine Housing Component that channels exhaust gases existing the engine to the turbine for maximum rotational effect.

Central Rotating Shaft Supports the two main parts of a turbocharger. The turbine is connected to and rotates with the central rotating shaft.

Turbocharger Compressor Wheel Component that takes in ambient air and pressurizes it to a value above 14.7 psi. When the turbine rotates, so does the turbocharger compressor wheel.

Turbocharger Compressor Housing Used to compress ambient air and direct it into an intake stream of an engine above ambient pressure.

Questions 1.Define Turbo Boost. 2.Is there a limit on how much turbo boost an engine can safely & efficiently utilize? 3.Define the concept of Knocking associated with too much Boost pressure. 4.Define Turbo Lag. 5.How does Internal & External Wastegates work?
