Biography Gordon Rodger Alexander Buchannan Parks was born on November 30, 1912. Gordon was the youngest of 15 children. His family was very poor When Parks was 15 years old, his mother died and he was sent to live with a married sister in St. Paul, Minnesota. He and his brother-in-law did not get along and he was evicted within a few weeks. He slept in trolley cars, loitered in pool halls, played piano in a brothel, worked as a factotum in a whites-only club, and worked as a waiter on a luxury train. In 1938, Parks was struck by photographs of migrant workers in a magazine and bought his first camera, a Voightlander Brilliant, for $12.50 at a pawnshop. He took many great pictures that he was awarded for. Gordon Parks died on March 7, 2006. He was a great man

A Man of Many Talents Gordon was a outstanding African-American photographer, musician, poet, novelist, journalist, activist, and film director. Julius Rosenwald Fellowship, 1941; Notable Book Award, American Library Association for A Choice of Weapons, 1966; Emmy Award for documentary, Diary of a Harlem Family, 1968; Spingarn Award, 1972; Christopher Award for Flavio, 1978; National Medal of the Arts, 1988; Library of Congress National Film Registry Classics film honor for The Learning Tree, 1989; honorary Doctor of Letters, University of the District of Columbia, 1996; induction into the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum, 2002; Jackie Robinson Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, 2002.

How Did Parks Become A Photographer? IIIIn 1938, Parks was struck by photographs of migrant workers in a magazine and bought his first camera, a Voightlander Brilliant, for $12.50 at a pawnshop. The photo clerks who developed Parks' first roll of film, applauded his work and prompted him to get a fashion assignment at Frank Murphys women’s clothing store in St. Paul. Parks double exposed every frame except one, but that shot caught the eye of Marva Louis, boxer Joe Louis' elegant wife.
