Prohibition ► Alcohol was illegal in the US (1919-1932) ► 18 th Amendment (Volstead Act) made it illegal to manufacture, possess, sell, distribute, or consume alcohol ► Attitudes- 1916 2/3’s of US states were “dry” ► Christian Fundamentalists (anti-drinking) protect people from sin

► Urbanites and Ethnic Minorities (pro- drinking) Irish (whisky), Germans (beer), Italians (wine) ► *no sin in drinking (part of life) ► *Confused- “land of the free,” but no drinking? ► Public Drinking- Bars closed ► Speakeasy-illegal bar

► Attraction- breaking the law a thrill ► *50% of Americans did not drink during prohibition (but many who never drank before started once it became illegal) ► Enforcement- Only 5% of illegal alcohol caught ► Problems- 3,000 agents ► 1) Coastline- 10,000 miles ► 2) Borders- Canada & Mexico (alcohol legal)

► 3) Rum Runners- guys with fast cars who smuggled alcohol from Canada or Mexico ► 4) Women- started going to speakeasy's (thrill in breaking a harmless law) ► 5) Distilling- people made their own alcohol (bathtub gin) ► 6) Casual Attitude- No one saw drinking as a “real” crime
