Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Romanticism vs. Enlightenment The Romantics reacted against the value that the Enlightenment placed on science, reason, technology, and progress. Frankenstein represents a warning against the dangers of science. The Romantics criticized the negative effects of science and technology on human beings and society. Frankenstein reflects Romantic fears of unchecked progress.

Mary Shelley Shelley was the daughter of two radical philosophers: Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin. She married Percy Bysshe Shelley, a revered Romantic poet. She began writing Frankenstein when she was 18 years old. The idea came from a “ghost story” contest initiated by Lord Byron. Frankenstein was published anonymously in 1818.

Romanticism and Nature Romantic writers viewed Nature as wild and mysterious, rather something to be controlled and conquered. Frankenstein serves as a warning against the desire to control. Frankenstein combines elements of 1. Romanticism 2. Gothic 3. Science-Fiction

Frankenstein combines Romantic and Gothic elements and is considered an early form of science-fiction. Gothic: joys of extreme emotion, the supernatural, thrill of fear, psychological/physical terror Sublime: overwhelming emotion or awe Science-Fiction: futuristic setting involving imagined innovations of science and technology. A scientist, Victor Frankenstein, creates life and fails to understand his creation. He considers the creature a monster and does not show it compassion.
