Mary Shelley Shelley was the daughter of two radical philosophers: Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin. She married Percy Bysshe Shelley, a revered Romantic poet. She began writing Frankenstein when she was 18 years old. The idea came from a “ghost story” contest initiated by Lord Byron. Frankenstein was published anonymously in 1818.
