2 After Adolf Hitler's invasion of Poland in September 1939, the United States began to supply England and other allies with as much material as possible. Yet it continued to sell oil and scrap iron to Japan, despite that country's aggressions in China and elsewhere in the Far East. American shipments destined to help the Allies were lost to German submarine warfare, but material destined for Japan arrives safely.

15 The Bataan Death March The 60-mile march occurred after the three-month Battle of Bataan, part of the Battle of the Philippines (1941–42) The march, involving the forcible transfer of 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war captured by the Japanese in the Philippines from the Bataan peninsula to prison camps

16 The Bataan Death March was characterized by wide-ranging physical abuse and murder, and resulted in very high fatalities inflicted upon the prisoners and civilians along the route by the Japanese. –Beheadings –cutting of throats –bayonet stabbing –Rape –Disembowelment –rifle butt beating –deliberate refusal to allow the prisoners food or water

18 Battle of Wake Island, 8-23 December 1941 Immediately after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, the Japanese began their assault on Wake Island.
