Financial Policy Houston Tried to raise money, pay off debt, and cut government spending. Debt grew from $1.25 million to $2 million during 1 st term. Methods: tariff & other taxes, sale of public lands, cut size of army, cut govt. jobs, reduced govt. salaries. Lamar Spent money freely- Santa Fe Expedition Indian Wars ($2.5 million) Debt grew from $2 million to $7 million during his term.

Land Policy Houston Free land given to families living in Texas before March 2 and to veterans of revolution. Homestead Law Lamar Attempted to annex New Mexico (Santa Fe Expedition)

Indian Policy Houston Respected Indians’ right to have title to land. Worked to establish peace and promote trade with Indians. Lamar Believed Indians had no rights to land they occupied. Drove Cherokees out of Texas (Battle of the Neches)

Indian Policy (continued) Houston Used Texas Rangers to patrol the frontier. Believed war with Indians was unjust and would be too costly. Lamar Waged war against Comanches- Council House Fight, Battle of Plum Creek Spent $2.5 million on war.

Education Policy Houston None. Lamar Set aside land to support public schools and universities. “Father of Education in Texas”
