The Heavy Ion Group at UH is a sub-group of experimental particle physicists on the Physics Faculty (4 Experimentalists & 1 Theorist). Pinsky-University of Houston ALICE-USA DOE Panel Review 10 Our Contributions to the EMCal Project UH will be responsible for the acquisition and fabrication of the LED calibration components and fabrication of wavelength-shifting fiber bundles… UH can also offer the support infrastructure to setup an alternate tower assembly site in the event that an accelerated production schedule is feasible.

Pinsky-University of Houston ALICE-USA DOE Panel Review 11 The UH/TLC 2 Connection TLC 2 (The Texas Learning and Computation Center) is currently providing ~150 CPUs for ALICE Data Challenges. Support has been recognized at LCG as being among the best. TLC 2 could offer even more resources as a match to supplement support to fund ~1.5% of ALICE total computing needs (see Soltz computing presentation)… In addition, such hardware support would also be matched with 2.0 flexible FTE in support personnel (Middleware software development, sys-admin and maintenance)

Relation to the Big Bang early evolution and the current Large Scale Structure of the visible Universe. (This can lead to collaborations with local cosmologists…) –This is most sensitive to the nature of the QGP/Baryon phase transition, but this also needs an accurate QGP EOS… The “Matter” Problem: How did we get the current matter distribution? –Needs a fairly precise knowledge of the QGP EOS… ^
