American Settlers Move West 1821: Mexico became independent. 1824: Mexico adopted a republican constitution that declared rights for all Mexicans Empresarios: agents – bring settlers to Texas – paid in land Stephen F. Austin: empresario that started a Texas colony The first 300 families became known as the Old Three Hundred. – very successful!

American Settlers Move West Americans were given free land by the Texas government, but they had to obey Mexican laws. Many Americans chose NOT to obey laws ADD THIS: colonist brought slaves with them, which was banned in the Texas territory at the time! 1830: Angered by this, Mexico banned further settlements by Americans

Texans Revolt Against Mexico October 1835: Mexican army tried to remove a cannon from the town of Gonzales, Texas, but the American rebels would not allow them. The rebels won marking the beginning of the Texas War for Independence March 1836: Texans declared independence from Mexico – became Republic of Texas!

Texans Revolt Against Mexico Created a Republican government modeled after US gov’t President: David Burnet; Vice- President: Lorenzo de Zavala; head of Texas army: Sam Houston Austin went to the United States to seek money and troops.

The Battle of the Alamo Date Feb 23- Mar 6, 1836 Leaders M: Santa Anna T: Col. William Travis What happened? Less than 200 rebels fought the huge Mexican force at Alamo Outcome Mexicans won but huge losses – all rebel defenders of the Alamo were killed

Battle of San Jacinto Date April 21, 1836 Leaders M: Santa Anna T: Sam Houston What happened? Santa Anna chose site carelessly – Houston surprised attacked the M camp shouting “REMEMBER THE ALAMO!” Outcome Texans captured Santa Anna and forced him to sign treaty granting TX its independence

An Independent Nation Sam Houston was the hero of the new independent nation of Texas Created a new town name Houston and made it the capital To increase the population, Texas offered land grants. American settlers came from nearby southern states, often bringing slaves with them to help grow and harvest cotton.

An Independent Nation Most hoped that the US would annex, or take control of Texas, making it a state. President Andrew Jackson refused – concerned that admitting Texas as a slave state would upset the fragile balance of free and slate states Also did not want to have a war with Mexico over Texas

An Independent Nation US, France and Britain recognized Texas as an independent nation – became a state in 1845 Mexico did not recognize Texas as an independent nation Republic organized the Texas Rangers to guard long frontier from Mexican and Native American attacks In 1844, Texas and Mexico signed a peace treaty Events will ultimately lead to the Mexican-Amer. War!
