Electrifying Electromagnets 4 th Grade Batson
3
Problem/Question Does the number of winds around the rivet affect the magnet’s strength?
4
Hypothesis If we increase the number of winds around the rivet, then we think that the strength of the electromagnet will increase because of the electromagnetic field.

Control Variable Control Variable Battery Rivet Circuit Switch Washers The number of winds
6
Materials Circuit base Battery Switch Wires Rivet Washers
7
Procedure 1. Make a circuit with a switch, battery, wires, and rivet 2. First trial: wind the wire around the rivet 25 times at the head 3. Count how many washers it picks up 4. Repeat with 45 winds around rivet 5. Record the results on the data chart
8
Results The rivet with 25 wind picked up an average of 3 washers. The rivet with 45 winds picked up an average of 9 washers.

Data

Conclusion Our prediction was right. The more winds around the rivet, the more washers the electromagnet picked up. The greater number of winds increased the strength of the electromagnet. The greater number of winds increased the strength of the electromagnet.
