1 Election of 1992 Democratic convention held in New York, NY, nominated Bill Clinton and Al Gore (July 1). The Republicans held their convention in Houston, TX, they renominate Bush and Quayle (Aug. 20). The third party candidate is Ross Perot, a self made billionaire.

2 Election of 1992 Themes –Trustworthiness and character. –Nation’s economic weakness and the need for change. During the Presidential debate –Bush stressed concerns about Clinton's trustworthiness and character and talked about the progress toward world peace that had been achieved under his administration. –Clinton concentrated on the nation's economic problems and the failure of past Republican administrations -- the need for change.

3 Election of 1992 Presidential debate (cont.) –Perot highlighted his favorite themes: the government was being run by lobbyists and special interests; irresponsible officials were leaving a huge national debt to our children; tough measures were needed to put the country back on track. Economic Issues –Clinton- use the government to stimulate the economy while reducing the deficit by 50 percent over four years.

4 Election of 1992 Economic Issues (cont.) –Bush- would not raise taxes or over expand the government and called for a balanced-budget amendment, a line-item veto and a taxpayer check-off rule. –Perot- emphasized the importance of reducing the deficit and national debt and called for bipartisan cooperation in Washington.

7 US Events April 29- An all-white jury in suburban Simi Valley, California, acquits four white Los Angeles police officers on all but one charge stemming from a March 1991 beating of black motorist Rodney King. April 29- Hours after the trial, looting and mayhem break out across South Central Los Angeles. As the sun sets, attacks become increasingly violent, and more than 100 arson fires engulf much of the area. By dawn, about a dozen people are reported killed in the rioting. June 16- Caspar W. Weinberger indicted in Iran-Contra affair.

Dec 24- Bush pardons former Reagan Administration officials involved in Iran-Contra affair: Caspar W. Weinberger, Duane R. Clarridge, Clair E. George, Elliott Abrams, Alan D. Fiers, Jr., and Robert C. McFarlane.
