CELL-a-bration
3
Prokaryotes A. Prokaryotic cells are less complex B. Unicellular C. Do not have a nucleus & no membrane-bound organelles D. Most have a cell wall surrounding the cell membrane & a single, looped chromosome (genetic material) in the cytoplasm E. Mostly bacteria
4
Eukaryotes A. More complex cells B. Includes both unicellular & multicellular organisms C. Do have a true nucleus & membrane-bound organelles D. Organelles are internal structures in cell’s that perform specific functions E. Eukaryotes include plant cells, animal cells, fungi, algae, & protists
6
Cytoplasm Location = inside cell (outside the nucleus) Function = suspends organelles Pro/Eu/both = both Plant/animal/both = both
7
Nucleus Location = near center of cell in cytoplasm Function = controls the cell; leader! Pro/Eu/both = Eukaryotes Plant/animal/both = both
8
Nuclear envelope Location = around nucleus Function = has pores through which ribosomes & DNA pass into cytoplasm Pro/Eu/both = Eukaryotes Plant/animal/both = both
9
Chromatin Location = in nucleus (or in cytoplasm in prokaryotes) Function = genetic code; passes traits to offspring Pro/Eu/both = both Plant/animal/both = both
10
Nucleolus Location = in nucleus Function = makes ribosomes Pro/Eu/both = Eukaryotes Plant/animal/both = both
11
Ribosome Location = in cytoplasm & on rough ER Function = makes proteins Pro/Eu/both = both Plant/animal/both = both
12
Endoplasmic reticulum Location = in cytoplasm (smooth ER: w/o ribosomes & rough ER: with ribosomes) Function = transports substances throughout cell & cellular chemical reactions Pro/Eu/both = Eukaryotes Plant/animal/both = both
13
Golgi apparatus Location = in cytoplasm Function = modifies, sorts, and packages proteins from ER Pro/Eu/both = Eukaryotes Plant/animal/both = both
14
Lysosome Location = in cytoplasm Function = digests substances Pro/Eu/both = Eukaryotes Plant/animal/both = both
15
Vacuole Location = in cytoplasm Function = temporary storage Pro/Eu/both = both Plant/animal/both = both (bigger in plant)
16
Mitochondria Location = in cytoplasm Function = produce energy in the form of ATP Pro/Eu/both = Eukaryotes Plant/animal/both = both
17
Chloroplast Location = in cytoplasm Function = capture light energy & produce food (contains chlorophyll) Pro/Eu/both = Eukaryote Plant/animal/both = PLANT
18
Cytoskeleton Location = in cytoplasm Function = structure & support Microtubules = thin, hollow proteins Microfilaments = thin, solid proteins Pro/Eu/both = Eukaryotes Plant/animal/both = both
19
Centriole Location = in cytoplasm Function = organize cell division Pro/Eu/both = EU (animals and most protists) Plant/animal/both = animal
20
Cilia Location = cell outer surface Function = locomotion & feeding Pro/Eu/both = both Plant/animal/both = unicellular and animal
21
Flagella Location = cell outer surface Function = locomotion & feeding Pro/Eu/both = both Plant/animal/both = unicellular organisms and animals
22
Plasma/Cell membrane Location = surrounds cell Function = protection & selective permeable (lets certain items in & out) Pro/Eu/both = both Plant/animal/both = both
23
Cell wall Location = outside the cell membrane Function = support & protection Pro/Eu/both = both Plant/animal/both = PLANT
