Lathe Boring Machining process to finish existing holes to exact size (rough cast holes or previously machined) Assures accuracy of hole location (concentricity) Produces smooth finish requiring little or no further machining Can produce tapered holes
3
Boreing tool
4
Tool location at or just above center line. Produces finer finish
5
Bore diameter controlled by cross feed movement Compound is “locked”
6
Tool design and machining requirements Small nose radius Cutting tool doesnt rub part below cutting edge Bar as large and rigid as possible Minimum tool overhang As heavy a cut as possible
7
Rough and Finish Roughing – quickly removes excess metal, leaving coarse finish Finishing – lighter cuts and slower feed rate, gives better surface finish and accurate bore
8
Feed direction Feeding in – Roughing work, 'loads' the tool. Heavier cuts Feeding out – lighter cuts. Reduces tool spring
9
This evening: Boring operation in aluminum. Inspection using transfer measurement and calipers.
