3. The oboe is a family of double reed woodwind musical instruments. The most commonly used variant, the standard oboe, plays in the treble or soprano range. It is made from a wooden tube roughly 65 cm (25½ inches) long, with metal keys, a conical bore and flared bell. The sound is produced by blowing into the reed and vibrating a column of air. The distinctive oboe tone is versatile, and has been described as "bright". When the term oboe is used alone, it is generally taken to mean the standard treble instrument.

7. HISTORY: The flute is a family of musical instrument of the woodwind group. Unlike woodwind instruments with reeds, a flute is an aerophone or reedless wind instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air across an opening. According to the instrument classification of Hornbostel–Sachs, flutes are categorized as edge-blown aerophones.

10. A flute produces sound when a stream of air directed across the hole which creates a vibration of air inside (instrument). This excites the air contained in the usually cylindrical resonant cavity within the flute. The player changes the pitch of the sound produced by opening and closing holes in the body of the instrument, thus changing the effective length of the resonator and its corresponding resonant frequency. By varying the air pressure, a flute player can also change the pitch of a note by causing the air in the flute to resonate at a harmonic rather than the fundamental frequency without opening or closing any holes.

14. There are some different types of clarinets of differing sizes and pitches. The clarinet family is the largest woodwind family, with more than a dozen types, ranging from the (extremely rare) BBB ♭ octo- contrabass to the A ♭ piccolo clarinet. Of these, many are rare or obsolete (there is only one BBB ♭ octo-contrabass clarinet in existence, for example), and music written for them is usually played on more common versions of the instrument.

19. The bassoon is known for its lovingly soothing sounds and its incidental use as a lethal weapon. In World War II, it was used by the German forces at the Battle of the Bulge to force the 73rd Allied Otter Division into a hasty retreat. It is approximately 3/10 of a league long and weighs about 2 stones. If thrown correctly (this is known as the "perfect pitch"), it can drop large game animals. The technical term for its shape is the "bong." Despite the bassoon's odd sound and look, it is a little better than the oboe and a lot better than the viola.
