The inventor Abraham Darby invented Coke smelting in 1709 during the industrial revolution. Instead of burning charcoal he started burning coke. This was important to Britain because charcoal was becoming scarce. Since replacing charcoal with coke it made melting metals in factory quicker.

How &when did Abraham Darby die ? He died on 8th March 1717, Madeley Court, Shropshire at the age of 39 and is buried at Broseley, Shropshire,England Abraham Darby died in 1717, at his home, after 18 months' illness! He had built a house for himself in Coalbrookdale but did not live to occupy it. His widow died only a few months later!
