MAUS Update Adam Dobbs, MICE Project Board, 16 th April 2015

Contents MAUS Description Organisation Infrastructure Geometry MC Beam Generation Detectors CKOV EMR KL TOF Trackers Global tracking Testing Framework Documentation Deployment Online Monitoring and Reconstruction Summary 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update2

Organisation Head of MAUS A.Dobbs Unpacking Y.Karadzhov G4Beamline J.Nugent Geometry R.Bayes Global Tracking M.A.Uchida PID C.Pidcott Tracking J.Greis CKOV L.Cremaldi D.Rajaram M.Winters EMR F.Drielsma KL M.Bogomilov J.Nugent TOF D.Rajaram Tracker P.Kyberd Kalman C.Hunt Geometry C.Heidt Online Displays M.A.Uchida Unpacking E.Overton 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update3

Infrastructure: Design Well defined Map-Reduce based API C++ and Python code ROOT and JSON output Celery-based parallel multiprocessor framework (spill level) 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update4 Input DAQ Online ROOT file MC Spill Map EMR TOF Tracker Reduce TOF1 x - y TOF1 -> TOF2 Tracker x - y Output ROOT file JSON file Spills passed from module to module

Infrastructure: Issues and Updates Some slow memory leaks → pursue with tools like Valgrind C++ class and JSON (ascii) internal data Speed issues due to string conversions when passing between modules → Move to passing C++ classes only Potential development of C++11 parallel multithread framework at mapper level Unpacker updated to reflect new DAQ software version Now one unpacker for Step I data, one for Step IV, switch with environment flag 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update5

Geometry High precision GDML-based geometry Produce from engineering CAD drawings Stored in CDB Recent introduction of fast GDML parser – much quicker load times Ready for Step IV 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update6

MC Beam Generation Upstream beam generation provided from: G4Beamline Input file Sampling pre-defined distributions G4Beamline is method of choice, but pretty resource intensive Full set of beams initially requested by Analysis group would take too long May need to consider adding faster alternative, in discussion with Analysis group G4Beamline method has already been used successfully for Physics Block Challenge Ready for Step IV 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update7

Detectors 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update8

Detectors: CKOV Reconstruction working, used in online reconstruction routinely Some MC code not yet in MAUS trunk due to staffing issues Now making better progress with new recruit at IIT, remaining code should be in shortly Almost Step IV ready 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update9 28 th -29 th March 15 data

Detectors: EMR MC 100% MC digitisation 100% Real data digitisation 100% Reconstruction 80% Interface to CDB 50% Reducer 40% Range measurement and tracking matching in release Ready for Step IV 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update10

Detectors: KL MC 100% MC digitisation 95% Tuning and Validation Real data digitisation 100% Reconstruction 100% Calibration interface to CDB 100% Reducer 100% Ready for Step IV 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update11

Detectors: TOF MC 100% MC digitisation 90% Optimisation, validation, MC trigger Real data digitisation 100% Reconstruction 100% Enhanced position measurement in progress Calibration interface to CDB 100% Reducer 100% Ready for Step IV 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update12 e μ π μ e π

Detectors: Trackers MC 100% MC digitisation 95% ADC smearing Real data digitisation 40% Broken following changes to unpacker and internal MAUS structure after release 0.7.3 Recent DAQ software upgrade means 0.7.3 no longer viable for new data Fix in progress as high priority Reconstruction 90% Optimise final Kalman filter track fit, optimise pattern recognition Calibration interface to CDB 50% Reducer 80% Close to ready for Step IV 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update13

Global tracking Good progress since last review, detailed scheduled with milestones, on course Switched from tracking using transfer matrices to Runge-Kutta spline method Upstream tracks matched with PID produced Downstream tracks quite close Plans to produce tracks across cooling channel in zero field for alignment work during commissioning Plans to harmonise detector output to global coordinate system 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update14

Testing Framework Code protected by extensive set of tests: C++ unit tests - line coverage non-legacy: 79% - line coverage legacy: 38% Python unit tests Style tests Cpplint Pylint Integration tests Load tests Monitored by set of machines running the system http://test.mice.rl.ac.uk/ 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update15

Documentation Technical documentation present, could use updating and expanding More user documentation would be helpful Doxygen in place MAUS paper in production – D. Rajaram Tracker software paper in production – A. Dobbs Awaiting results of Kalman improvements See http://micewww.pp.rl.ac.uk/projects/maus/wiki 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update16

Deployment MAUS version 0.9.4 running on the GRID for fast data reconstruction Second iteration of Physics Block Challenge completed, using full MAUS release, data available for analysis MAUS version 0.9.4 running for online reconstruction in MLCR Dozens of installations running at collaborating institutes and personal machines 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update17

Online Monitoring and Reconstruction Fast low level online monitoring currently being used for running (separate from MAUS) Fast higher level online reconstruction currently being used for running too, running MAUS-v0.9.4 (online and offline code the same), uses the Reducer modules Live data link: 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update18 Run 6278, 29 th March 2015 http://micewww.pp.rl.ac.uk/projects/maus/wiki

Online Reconstruction Run 6278 16th April 2015A. Dobbs, MAUS Update19 CKOV PMT Charge Time of Flight ToF0 -> 1 KL Data

Summary Infrastructure – needs speed up, fixing of last mem leaks, otherwise ready MC – Ready for Step IV, caveat on upstream beam generation Geometry – Ready for Step IV CKOV – Not yet Step IV ready EMR – Ready for Step IV KL – Ready for Step IV TOF – Ready for Step IV Tracker – Almost ready for Step IV (fix unpacking, improve final track fit) Global – not yet ready for Step IV but making quick progress 16th April 2015A.
