The site has been generated and is maintained by: People who feel that they have something to offer. Companies who wish to advertise their wares and services. Universities, colleges and other educational institutes who wish to share knowledge with the users of the Internet etc.

Domain Is the virtual space that your web site occupies in the Internet world. Each Internet site has to have a name. This is known as DNS (Domain Name System). A name has 5 parts: e.g. http://www.dlcbcats.co.za http://www.dlcbcats.co.za

Home Page The first page of a web site It will usually give information about the “owner” and will provide a “springboard” to other pages. Other pages Could all belong to the same web site They could provide a way to visit other web sites by using hyperlinks.

Search Engine A search engine is a web site that will look for the key word/s. It has a data base of references. It will display the most likely matches. It does not have the information you need. It will lead you to web sites that have the information. It should never be used in a list of references in a bibliography. If you have generated a web site you can build in keywords on each page. Most search engines use a web crawler (or Spider) program to pick up references from web sites. These references will be used to help the web site enter the search engines data base.

Copyright and the web Any information you use from the web belongs to someone else. It is their intellectual property. ACADEMIC COMMERCIAL

ACADEMIC You need to acknowledge the source from where you obtained the information. All work should be written in your own words in other words do not copy and paste! You should include anything that you use directly in inverted commas and acknowledge the site and author immediately.

COMMERCIAL As for academic BUT you need to obtain permission to use it. When researching using the internet, be careful of the type of sites you use to get your information. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Always check facts using two or more web sites.

Download/Upload  Download:-The data that we access is downloaded to RAM. If we find something that we need it must go to more secondary storage. If we print the page all the adverts and banners on the page will also be printed. This wastes paper. We can select what we need copy and paste it into a word processor and then SUMMARISE it before handing it in. Upload:- sending information to a web site

Internet Cookie This is a small text file which some Internet sites generate. It is stored on your computer and the next time you enter the site the cookie is read and the site can be displayed with any personal preferences you may have given the last time you accessed the site. It also can help to load the site quicker the second time you visit it.
