A Study on Future Multipurpose Vessel for the Northern Baltic Sea Golam Mortuja LAIVA 2025 Espoo
2
Objectives To analyze world seaborne trade and future cargo flow on Northern Baltic Sea towards 2025 To justify the need for multipurpose vessel in 2025, multipurpose vessel design, fleet trends, forecast the market situation in 2025 and identify the upcoming challenges To identify the best alternative future machinery concept for multipurpose vessel Vessel’s concept development
3
Seaborne Trade on Baltic Sea Global seaborne trade: to double by 2030 Ports along Baltic Sea coast: 30% cargo volume increase by 2030 Finland : 27% increase in international seaborne traffic (source: Finnish Transport Agency, Finnish Customs) 2010 2030 Source: Baltic Transport Outlook 2030
4
Finnish Industrial Production Trends Metal and Mining industry : production to double by 2020 Forest industry : decreasing production volume Chemical industry : decreasing transport volume Wind Power Energy : Finland’s target is to increase renewable energy usage from 28.5% to 38% in 2020 compared to 2005, resulting need of 900 windmills Source: Geological Survey of Finland
5
Export and Import Cargo Flow :Finland Export Paper, Paper- board Stainless Steel Ores, Concen- trates Pulp, Plywood, Sawn Wood Renewable Energy Products Oil Products Metal Products Machinery Equipments General Cargo Import Timber, Wood Chips Steel Scrap Crude Mineral Ores, Concen- trates Coal And Coke Transport Vehicles Other Raw Materials General Cargo Oil Products
6
Multipurpose Vessel (MPV) Unique characteristics – crane, cargo hold flexibility Liquid cargo to dry cargo Major bulk – iron ore, coal grain Minor bulk – steel products, fertilizer, construction material Speed range between 14 to 17 knots Average energy efficiency and ship size increases, choice for larger (15,000 - 20,000 deadweight)
7
Finnish flagged MPV 14 vessels as multipurpose Average age 21 years Max = 36, 26(2),17(3) years Source: Clarkson Research
8
Future Multipurpose Vessel Vessel size ~15,000 Deadweight Speed 15 to 17 knots (depends on operation) Ice class 1A Super, double acting option Multi-folding hatch covers
9
Future Machinery Concept LNG as main fuel Single screw propulsion with o 2-stroke Dual Fuel (size limit) or o 4-stroke Dual Fuel engine Save over 1.9 MEur annually compare to single screw marine gas oil machinery concept. Lowest concept payback time and highest net present value(NPV) CPP 8 400 kW 7RT-flex50DF
10
Summary The outlook for multipurpose vessels is volatile but the long term prospects are positive New rules will increase costs Efficient forecasting model needs to be developed Single screw LNG Dual Fuel 2-S or 4-S machinery solution will be the best Standard multipurpose vessel for Baltic Sea Large ecosystem (collaboration with different industry segments)
