1
Building Up Again Those Things Which Are Destroyed Galatians 2:18
2
Background Paul answers the Judaizing teachers who demand the Old Law to be saved (Gal. 1-6) Paul rebukes Peter for his hypocrisy related to the Judaizing teachers (Gal. 2:11-21) Paul sets forth an important principal: “If I build up again those things which I destroyed...” (Gal. 2:18) What does this principal mean for us today?
3
Background Peter “destroyed” the Old Law on Pentecost and afterward (Acts 2-5) Peter “destroyed” the Old Law in the home of Cornelius (Acts 10: 1 – 11:18) Peter “destroyed” the Old Law again in Jerusalem (Acts 15:6-11) When Peter acted hypocritically, he was “building up” again the Old Law which he had “destroyed” years earlier (Gal. 2:12)
4
Those Things Which Are Destroyed The Old Law has been “destroyed” (Eph. 2:14; Col. 2:14) Many things have been “destroyed” through the teaching of the gospel (2 Cor. 10:4-5)
5
Are We Building Up Again the Destroyed? Denominationalism was “destroyed” in the early 1800’s by restorationists, but some are rebuilding denominational structures (Eph. 4:4-6) Some are rebuilding denominational practices like instrumental music, the Lord’s Supper on a weekday, Easter and Christmas, etc. (Eph. 5:19; Acts 20:7) Some are rebuilding denominational errors like premillennialism, pentecostalism, etc. (1 Jn. 4:1)
6
Are We Building Up Again the Destroyed? Worldly ways are “destroyed” when we become a Christian, but some are rebuilding those worldly ways later in life (Gal. 5; Eph. 4; 5; Col. 3) Division is “destroyed” when we become a Christian, but some are rebuilding that division later in life (Phil. 2:2-3; 4:2-3) Putting self first is “destroyed” when we become a Christian, but some are rebuilding that selfishness later in life (3 Jn. 9; Rev. 2:4; 3:16)
7
Do Not Build Again the Destroyed of God Do not let the pressures of the world cause you to rebuild the destroyed of God (Gal. 2:11-14) It is a sin to rebuild the destroyed of God (Gal. 2:18) Rather, focus on being right with God and serving Christ (Gal. 1:10; 2:20; 6:14)
